TL;DR: In this paper, a series of fused CaF2-SiO2 binary fluxes have been developed to investigate element transfer behaviors under high heat input submerged arc welding, where transfer of elements is quantified by Δ quantities, which demonstrate respective contributions from the flux to the weld metal.
Abstract: A series of fused CaF2-SiO2 binary fluxes have been developed to investigate element transfer behaviors under high heat input submerged arc welding. Transfer of elements is quantified by Δ quantities, which demonstrate respective contributions from the flux to the weld metal. Effects of SiO2 contents on the transfer of Si, Mn, and O have been thoroughly evaluated. Thermodynamic considerations have been attempted for constraining chemical reactions and mechanisms involved in welding.

Abstract: A problem facing the product development community is the selection of a set of conditions which will result in a product with a desirable combination of properties. This essentially is a problem i...

TL;DR: Modified desirability functions that are everywhere differentiable are presented so that more efficient gradient-based optimization methods can be used instead of search methods to optimize the overall desIRability response.
Abstract: Desirability functions have been used extensively to simultaneously optimize several responses. Since the original formulation of these functions contains non-differentiable points, only search methods can be used to optimize the overall desirability response. Furthermore, all responses are treated as equally important. We present modified desirability functions that are everywhere differentiable so that more efficient gradient-based optimization methods can be used instead. The proposed functions have the extra flexibility of allowing the analyst to assign different priorities among the responses. The methodology is applied to a wire bonding process that occurs in semiconductor manufacturing, an industrial process where multiple responses are common.

TL;DR: In this article, all available thermodynamic and phase diagram data have been critically assessed for all phases in the CaO-Al 2O3, Al2O3-SiO2, and CaO al2O 3-Si2 systems at 1 bar pressure from 298 K to above the liquidus temperatures.
Abstract: All available thermodynamic and phase diagram data have been critically assessed for all phases in the CaO-Al2O3, Al2O3-SiO2, and CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 systems at 1 bar pressure from 298 K to above the liquidus temperatures. All reliable data for the binary systems have been simultaneously optimized to obtain, for each system, one set of model equations for the Gibbs energy of the liquid slag and all solid phases as functions of composition and temperature. The modified quasichemical model was used for the slag. With these binary parameters and those from the optimization of the CaO-SiO2 system reported previously, the quasichemical model was used to predict the thermodynamic properties of the ternary slag. Two additional small ternary parameters were required to reproduce the ternary phase diagram and ternary activity data to within experimental error limits. The calculated optimized phase diagram and thermodynamic properties are self-consistent and are the most reliable currently available estimates of the true values.
