Design of energy efficient lighting system for educational laboratory

Abstract: Today a number of renewable energy technologies are available for power generation, but fossil fuels are still providing a dominant share nevertheless. In order to decrease the electric bill and save our environment, energy conservation is always crucial. In this paper a very interesting idea is presented which is economically viable to reduce electricity usage in our buildings. An effort has been made to estimate the amount of energy that could be saved in the dormitory section of the IMOP building in Russia. Although there are many ways to reduce the consumption of electricity in this building but here the emphasis is on changing light bulbs inside the rooms, kitchen, toilet and bathroom of each apartment. The scope of the study is to figure out monthly electricity saving by replacing traditional light bulbs by LED light bulbs in the building under consideration. The total investment required and the payback period is also presented.

Abstract: The current Brazilian energy situation, facing a dry period and having its main energy matrix based on hydroelectricity, brings up the necessity to review the use of natural resources available. This study focused on the end use of electricity (demand), and analysed the energy consumption of a lighting system from a floor of a Police Station building of "Receita Federal do Brasil" (Internal Revenue Service of Brazil), located in the city of Londrina. The choice was motivated by a Legal Federal Instruction, published in "Diario Oficial da Uniao", which requires the classification of federal buildings in the National Labelling Programme for Buildings in case of reconstruction or retrofit. It was observed that the building conditions did not meet the standard requirements for lighting in the workplace, and it was impossible to classify the area in any of the standard levels of energy efficiency (EE). Due to nonconformities, the replacement of existing fluorescent lamps for LEDs was suggested using the DIALux® simulation software. The proposed solution was economically feasible, met the standard and respected the EE classification rules, reaching level A.

Abstract: The power demand increasing year by year have made the worldwide in energy crisis. Therefore proper energy management is required to use the available energy wisely. Lighting system play a role of decorative or functional purposes make it become the biggest energy consumption from total energy consumption. As an engineer, we apply our engineering knowledge to increase the efficiency of current lighting system to solve the problem of inefficiency of energy usage. There were various methodology/approach to have a more energy efficient system. Author came out with the effective method to satisfy both economic and technical requirement for commercial building’s lighting system. Theoretical analysis and simulation of lux level in accordance to Malaysian Standard 1525 using DIALux software have been performed. The appropriate lighting fixture had been selected for suitable usage of the room and the lux simulation were conducted to determine the minimum number of light fixtures required to achieve the minimum lux. Technically a higher energy efficiency lighting system should consume less power consumption, which draw less current from the power supply and achieve higher uniformity of lux achieved.

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of light sources on readability of students using psychophysical methods. Light sources such as Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) and Light Emitting Diode lamp (LED) of same power rating were used in this research work because of their high lighting efficiency and uniformity of illuminance compared to that of Incandescent lamp (IL) and florescent lamp (FL). A group of prospective students having normal vision, and abnormal vision like myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism were involved in the test process. Three types of test like Snellen visual acuity, Color contrast test and Readability test were conducted on student participants under different lighting conditions. Test results showed the visibility and color contrast sensitivity of the students were high in the LED illumination. The quantitative measure of readability under different circumstances showed that the lightness difference on text under different color combination and font size, affected their readability. The computed average results confirmed that the luminance and color contrast were improved in LED illumination and also proved a high readability measure in the experimentation. Both the results of psychophysical test were proven that LED lighting was the best lighting system suitable for color distinction and readability

Abstract: This work presents an autonomous street lighting system based on solar energy as primary source, batteries as secondary source, and lighting emitting diodes (LEDs) as lighting source. This system is being presented as an alternative for remote localities, like roads and crossroads. Besides, it presents high efficiency, because all power stages are implemented in DC current. The design of LEDs fixture, in order to replace a 70W high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp, is performed. This design takes into account the human eye response in scotopic conditions. LEDs driver and battery charger experimental results are presented. The battery charger presents three control modes: maximum power point tracker (MPPT) mode; constant current mode; and constant voltage mode. The control mode depends on the battery state (charged/discharged), and solar irradiance level. The battery charger input impedance is analyzed in order to ensure that the MPPT is obtained for any solar irradiance and panel temperature.

Abstract: Lighting plays an important role in the Hospital Diagnostic and Treatment Room. It shall be environmentally and functionally suitable for three groups of people: patients, hospital professionals and visitors. On the other hand lighting is considered a major consumer of electrical energy and therefore, hospital lighting design should consider the visual performance, visual comfort and energy efficiency. This article discusses the performance of different types of lighting installations used for hospital lighting system design applications: first the visual comfort and second to save energy consumptions in such applications. DIALux 4.8 simulation software is used to study and evaluate the efficient lighting scheme for the hospitals through the use of different types of lamps. Also, visual environment lighting system design procedure is explained. Economics of different lighting scenarios are highlighted.

Abstract: Solid state lighting (SSL) systems are set to begin competing with a number of mature lighting technologies in mainstream markets for narrow- and wide-area illumination. The paper provides a summary overview of the present state of the established illumination lighting sector in terms of its scale and global energy usage, and its core technologies and their major performance characteristics. The established technologies are themselves still evolving in response generally to growing, world-wide, legislative and environmental pressures, and also, no doubt, to the stimulus provided by the rapid advances in the performance of white-LED modules. Several promising new thermal and discharge lamp technologies are identified and discussed briefly.

Abstract: Light Emitting Diode (LED) is expected as the lighting source of next generation because they are long life, small size, and low power consumption, etc. In previous paper, we proposed a simple visible-light transmission system for sound using white LED. However, the flicker of light is sensed if the transmitted sound signal has the low frequency component. In this study, we propose improved modulation technique to overcome the flicker. LED can transmit audio signal while it is used for lighting source. We verified that it is possible to communicate with the received luminous flux of 1.1×10-5 lm without flicker. We also evaluated the effects of interference by plural LEDs.
