Designed-Based Research and Technology Enhanced Learning Environments

Abstract: During the past decade, design-based research has demonstrated its potential as a methodology suitable to both research and design of technology-enhanced learning environments (TELEs). In this paper, we define and identify characteristics of design-based research, describe the importance of design-based research for the development of TELEs, propose principles for implementing design-based research with TELEs, and discuss future challenges of using this methodology. Abstract: This paper focused on the improvement of student's assessment feedback and learning satisfaction in the higher education institutions in Oman using the E-learning system of University Communication Model (UCOM). During the study, an E-learning model was conceptualized using coursework program instruction, testing academic performance, faculty experience, and assessment method as the determinants. The aim of this work is to develop a `University Communication (UCOM) model for improving the student's assessment method and evaluating their academic performance. In the first phase of this study, a systematic review of the existing literature was carried out to determine the suitable quantitative and qualitative criteria of feature selection, like student satisfaction and degree of learning. The next phase involved the generation of an E-learning model for assessing the feedback and approval processes. The final step is the design of the evaluation forms that can measure the satisfaction of the technology and enhance the assessment method. In this study, surveys were distributed to the students of Al-Buraimi University College (BUC), Oman, to assess their level of satisfaction in using a UCOM model which served as a link between them and the University. The results were tested for accuracy, reliability, and validity using smart PLS. The findings of this paper assisted positively in four of the deployed factors and approved the capability of the developed model in improving student's assessment feedback using E-learning.

Abstract: Cloudworks (Cloudworks.ac.uk) is a social networking site designed for sharing, finding and discussing learning and teaching ideas and experiences. Design and development of the site has been based on an iterative analysis, development and implementation approach, underpinned by ongoing research and evaluation. To this end, we have been seeking to establish strategies to enable us to systematically position transactions and emerging patterns of activity on the site so that we can more reliably use the empirical evidence we have gathered. In this article we will introduce a framework we have developed for observing and supporting community development on the site. In building our framework we have used empirical evidence gathered from the site, then related it to the literature from a range of disciplines concerned with professional and learning communities. Abstract: This article introduces expertise-based training (XBT) as an instructional design theory that draws on the theories, findings, and methods of expertise research in order to create instructional strategies that can hasten the development of advanced learners into experts. The central tenants of XBT are: 1) Key cognitive sub-skills that underlie expert performance can be revealed through expert-novice research, 2) Instructional activities can be designed, often by repurposing expertise-novice research tasks, to systematically train key cognitive sub-skills, and 3) Targeted training of key cognitive sub-skills can hasten learners along their individual paths to expertise. XBT targets apparently “intuitive” aspects of expert decision-making, such as pattern recognition and situation awareness, with drills based on the detection, categorization, and prediction tasks used in expert-novice research. XBT contrasts with, and thus compliments, holistic instructional methods such as ProblemBased Learning and simulator-based training that are associated with professional education and training.

Abstract: The development of learning environments based on full-body interaction has become an increasingly important field of research in recent years. However, the design and evaluation strategies currently used present some significant limitations. Two major shortcomings are: the inadequate involvement of children in the design process and a lack of research into what meanings children construct within these learning environments. To tackle these shortcomings we present an evaluation-driven design approach, which aims at analyzing situated interpretations made by children. These interpretations are then used to guide and optimize design in an iterative process of design and assessment. This evaluation-driven design method was applied in the development of the EcoSystem Project, a full-body interaction learning environment for children aimed at supporting learning about environmental relationships. The application of this iterative approach proved to be highly effective both in facilitating continuous improvements in the proposed design and in reducing misconceptions by children using the environment. Moreover, experimental evaluation reported significant learning gains in children. This suggests both the potential of using full-body interaction to support learning and the effectiveness of our evaluation-driven approach in optimizing design solutions through the analysis of children’s interpretations.

Abstract: In this article, the authors first indicate the range of purposes and the variety of settings in which design experiments have been conducted and then delineate five crosscutting features that collectively differentiate design experiments from other methodologies. Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent—“engineering” particular forms of learning—and a theoretical orientation—developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them. The authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and in conducting a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment. Logistical issues, issues of measure, the importance of working through the data systematically, and the need to be explicit about the criteria for making inferences are discussed.
