TL;DR: A simple and rapid method for the determination of lithium in 1∶4 diluted, not deproteinized serum is described and can be completed in 10 minutes.

Abstract: Sensitive flame photometric methods have led to more frequent determinations of lithium in water analysis. Lithium concentrations usually found in natural water are much lower than those of the common alkalies sodium and potassium, but detectable amounts of lithium are present in most water samples. Frequently the concentrations observed are greater than might have been expected ; occasionally they are as much as several milligrams per liter. Standard Methods1 includes a tentative method for the determination of lithium ions in water. This method, the flame photometric technique, requires the addition of a sodium sulfatesodium carbonate solution to the sam-
