TL;DR: In this article, the water absorption, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties of the bamboo scrimbers were determined, and a bamboo scrimber made from bamboo bundles processed at 180°C hot dry air treatment combined with 18% PF resin loading showed good technological properties.
Abstract: In this study, mechanical fluffing, thermal treatment, and phenol formaldehyde (PF) impregnation, as well as cold-in and cold-out hot-pressing processes, were used to fabricate bamboo scrimbers. The water absorption, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties of the bamboo scrimbers were determined. The bamboo scrimber made from bamboo bundles processed at 180 °C hot dry air treatment combined with 18 % PF resin loading showed good technological properties. This bamboo scrimber had improved water absorption, as well as thickness and width swelling behavior, which is favorable for application to outdoor landscaping, exterior decoration, and garden furniture. The bamboo scrimber made from bamboo bundles processed at 0.35 MPa saturated steam treatment showed excellent mechanical strength, which is favorable for structural application.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of EMC was studied over four batches of 15 specimens each, conditioned for 6-8 weeks before testing at a temperature of 20 ± 2oC and at four different relative humidities (50, 65, 85, and 95%).
Abstract: The materials used in the study consisted of 720 small clear specimens of nominal dimensions 20 x 20 x 60 mm, of Turkish Red Pine (Pinus brutia) Lebanon cedar (Cedrus libani), Oriental beech (Fagus oriantalis), and English oak (Quercus robur ) from Turkey. The specimens were grouped into 4 batches of 15 specimens each and were tested in the ETH laboratories in Zurich, Switzerland. The influence of EMC was studied over four batches of 15 specimens each, conditioned for 6-8 weeks before testing at a temperature of 20 ± 2oC and at four different relative humidities (50%, 65%, 85%, and 95%). Time of flight value was measured with an ultrasonic commercial device Steinkamp BP-V. Measurements were made end to end directions (L, R, T) on each specimen, with a constant sensor coupling pressure. According to the time results of ultrasound devices, the wave velocities (length/time) and Edyn were calculated. Samples were also tested in uniaxial compression in order to determine E values in three orthotropic directions using a Zwick Z 100 universal testing machine. A load cell with 100-kN maximum capacity was used for compression tests performed in all directions. The feed rate was defined in such a way that the failure of the specimen should be reached in 90 (±30) s. The strains were evaluated using the digital image correlation DIC technique. Wood MC was determined by the oven-drying method. The R values between E and Edyn ranged from 0.79 to 0.96 for the species tested. Moisture content seems to be an influencing factor on sound velocities.

TL;DR: The research and development of biomass composites provide an effective approach for green growth and protecting the environment as mentioned in this paper, which have attracted the attention of many industries, such as bamboo fiber and advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites (BFRC).
Abstract: The research and development of biomass composites provide an effective approach for green growth and protecting the environment. This chapter focuses on bamboo fiber and advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites (BFRC), which have attracted the attention of many industries. The first part of this chapter presents the latest research about bamboo fiber: its morphology, mechanical property, testing methods, and environment adaptation. The best representations of advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites are core–shell structural bamboo plastic composite (BPC), bamboo bundle laminated veneer lumber (BLVL), and bamboo composite pressure pipe (BCPP). A summary of the processing technology, interfacial modification, assemble pattern design, material properties, and pilot application of the advanced bamboo fiber reinforced composites was presented. The value of bamboo as an eco-friendly material was analyzed with a series of tests and the development of various types of bamboo-based products. The relationship between bamboo growth character and its physical and mechanical properties, the R&D of large-span bamboo-based engineering materials and components, the dedicated assembly design for a bamboo-based mobile house with BLVL wall panels, and the R&D of bamboo-based products with a special-shaped structure were proposed, prospectively.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors presented a comprehensive introduction to bamboo scrimber including fabrication, properties, heat treatment, anti-mildew and anti-fungi, surface coating, machining, etc.
Abstract: Bamboo scrimber, a bio-material which is made of bamboo, has been considered as a substitute material in place of wood in China under the situation of increasing contradiction between supply and demand of wood resources. In the last decades, the fabrication technology of bamboo scrimber has been improved, which promotes the applications of this material. Especially in China where the bamboo scrimber was developed originally, blowout-like growth has emerged in related research in the recent 3–5 years. It is urgent to summarize the relevant research and present it to more people who are concerned with the aspects of bamboo scrimber as a bio-material. This paper presents a comprehensive introduction to bamboo scrimber including fabrication, properties, heat treatment, anti-mildew and anti-fungi, surface coating, machining, applications, etc. based on a review of literature from Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science. This work not only establishes fabrication parameters, surface proof technologies and application samples for the industry practice but also summarizes detailed inspection standards, mechanical and thermal properties regarding bamboo scrimber for the reference of scientific research.

TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of oriented bamboo scrimber boards (OBSB) have been investigated at three density levels (0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 g cm3).
Abstract: Abstract The properties of oriented bamboo scrimber boards (OBSB) have been investigated at three density levels (0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 g cm3), while the boards were made from moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) grown in Taiwan (T-OBSB) and China (C-OBSB). A non-destructive technique (NDT), ultrasonic-wave velocity (Vu) measurements were applied and the dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOEdyn) was calculated. Moreover, static modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), profile density distribution, internal bond strength (IB), springback (SB), and dimensional stability were determined based on traditional methods. Positive linear relationships between density and Vu, MOEdyn, MOE and MOR were observed, no matter if the measurements were done parallel (//) or perpendicular (⊥) to the fiber direction of the OBSBs. Moreover, Vu(//), MOEdyn,u(//), MOE(//), and MOR(//) were higher than Vu(⊥), MOEdyn,u(⊥), MOE(⊥) and MOR(⊥). C-OBSB had slightly lower Vu(//),Vu(⊥), MOEdyn,u(//) and DMOEu(⊥) values than T-OBSB. T-OBSB had higher MOE(//), MOE(⊥) and MOR(//) than C-OBSB, but less MOR(⊥). The profile density distribution of high-density T-OBSB showed singnificant data scattering. The profile density distribution of C-OBSB was homogeneous at all density levels. IB and SB data are directly proportional to density, but water absorption, thickness swelling and volumetric swelling are inversely proportional to density. T-OBSB has better bonding and strength properties, and dimensional stability than C-OBSB.
