TLDR
Brief self-report and informant-report versions of the Grit Scale are introduced, which measures trait-level perseverance and passion for long-term goals, and evidence is presented for its internal consistency, test–retest stability, consensual validity with informant- report versions, and predictive validity.Abstract:
In this article, we introduce brief self-report and informant-report versions of the Grit Scale, which measures trait-level perseverance and passion for long-term goals. The Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) retains the 2-factor structure of the original Grit Scale (Duckworth, Peterson, Matthews, & Kelly, 2007) with 4 fewer items and improved psychometric properties. We present evidence for the Grit-S's internal consistency, test-retest stability, consensual validity with informant-report versions, and predictive validity. Among adults, the Grit-S was associated with educational attainment and fewer career changes. Among adolescents, the Grit-S longitudinally predicted GPA and, inversely, hours watching television. Among cadets at the United States Military Academy, West Point, the Grit-S predicted retention. Among Scripps National Spelling Bee competitors, the Grit-S predicted final round attained, a relationship mediated by lifetime spelling practice.read more

Handbook of Self-Regulation of Learning and Performance
TL;DR: Self-Regulation of learning and performance has been studied extensively in the literature as mentioned in this paper, with a focus on the role of self-regulation in the development of learners' skills and abilities.

Much ado about grit: A meta-analytic synthesis of the grit literature.
TL;DR: A meta-analytic review of the grit literature with a particular focus on the structure of grit and the relation between grit and performance, retention, conscientiousness, cognitive ability, and demographic variables suggests that interventions designed to enhance grit may only have weak effects on performance and success.

Teaching Adolescents To Become Learners The Role of Noncognitive Factors in Shaping School Performance: A Critical Literature Review
Camille A. Farrington,Melissa Roderick,Elaine Allensworth,Jenny Nagaoka,Tasha Seneca Keyes,David W. Johnson,Nicole O. Beechum +6 more
TL;DR: The Chicago Center for Research and Evaluation (CCSR) as discussed by the authors encourages the use of research in policy action and improvement of practice, but does not argue for particular policies or programs, rather, it helps to build capacity for school reform by identifying what matters for student success and school improvement, creating critical indicators to chart progress, and conducting theory-driven evaluation to identify how programs and policies are working.

The grit effect: predicting retention in the military, the workplace, school and marriage.
TL;DR: Grit predicted retention over and beyond established context-specific predictors of retention and demographic variables in each setting and suggest that in addition to domain-specific influences, there may be domain-general individual differences which influence commitment to diverse life goals over time.

Self-Control and Grit Related but Separable Determinants of Success
TL;DR: Understanding how goals are hierarchically organized clarifies how self-control and grit are related but distinct: Self-control entails aligning actions with any valued goal despite momentarily more-alluring alternatives; grit entails having and working assiduously toward a single challenging superordinate goal through thick and thin, on a timescale of years or even decades.

The moderator–mediator variable distinction in social psychological research: Conceptual, strategic, and statistical considerations.

TL;DR: This article seeks to make theorists and researchers aware of the importance of not using the terms moderator and mediator interchangeably by carefully elaborating the many ways in which moderators and mediators differ, and delineates the conceptual and strategic implications of making use of such distinctions with regard to a wide range of phenomena.

Self-efficacy: toward a unifying theory of behavioral change.
TL;DR: An integrative theoretical framework to explain and to predict psychological changes achieved by different modes of treatment is presented and findings are reported from microanalyses of enactive, vicarious, and emotive mode of treatment that support the hypothesized relationship between perceived self-efficacy and behavioral changes.
