TL;DR: Investigating the effectiveness of using filmed theatre and guided questions to developing aural-visual comprehension in Spanish FL with university beginner students reveals that filmed theatre has proved to be an innovative and motivating learning tool to improve comprehension in general and develop the strategy of inference in particular.
Abstract: In the last few years, a significant amount of research in the intersection between teaching of foreign languages (FL) and theatre has been carried out. If a lot of these pieces of research are aimed at the improvement of the learners’ oral production through the use of drama, not so many, like our proposal here, look towards aural-visual comprehension from the perspective of the semiotics of theatre. This study investigates the effectiveness of using filmed theatre and guided questions to developing aural-visual comprehension in Spanish FL with university beginner students. The guided questions target the most important theatrical signs so that beginner students can fill some linguistic gaps without being overloaded by all the information received from the auditory and visual channels. The results reveal that filmed theatre has proved to be an innovative and motivating learning tool to improve comprehension in general and develop the strategy of inference in particular.

TL;DR: Laveault et al. as discussed by the authors examined the role of self-evaluation when a student takes on and exercises control over an activity in the classroom, taking into account homework assignments and role of parents.
Abstract: This paper examines how self-evaluation strategies contribute to helping students take control over their own learning processes. In addition to examining the role of self-evaluation when a student takes on and exercises control over an activity in the classroom, this paper takes into account homework assignments and the role of parents. Subjects (N =45) were in 6th-8th grade. They were distributed almost equally according to gender, grade level, and ability level. Twenty-nine parents completed a questionnaire about their child's homework assignment. The activity in class and the homework assignment consisted of a real-life mathematics task. The students compared products in two stores to choose the best bargains for a pre-determined checklist of school supplies. The mathematics involved arithmetic operations, percentages, and problem solving. Findings show that results obtained by grade 6 students were significantly higher than those of grade 7 and grade 8 students. This finding might indicate that the task was easier for grade 6 students. No differences were found between boys and girls regarding success at the task completed in class or at home. Gifted students performed better and had a higher level of agreement with their parent concerning the homework. Results highlight the complexity of the interaction between metacognition and motivational self-regulated variables. The importance of further research in this area is discussed. TL;DR: This paper conceptually develops the idea that information technology needs to develop simple and dedicated tools that improve and facilitate not only data access, processing and visualization, but also a common language and knowledge exchange between developers, graphic designers and journalists so that data projects can been easily and more quickly processed and managed.
Abstract: Data journalism includes three dimensions and requires three different types of journalism skills: computer assisted reporting, news applications development and data visualization. Computer assisted reporting represents an expertise in obtaining, analyzing and finding newsworthy angles in data. News reporters with this skill are able to discover interesting and relevant findings by analyzing data with the help of information technology tools. However, only news application developers know backend programming, database configuration and build interfaces to applications, and data visualization specialists can ensure user-friendly interactivity of today’s graphics. News organizations willing to engage in data journalism thus depend on collaboration between people belonging to very different professional cultures. Limits to collaboration work in this sense are resistance to change, lack of common language, different logics of communication, lack of measures to address these issues. Within this context the role of IT assumes a critical importance. Information technology needs to develop simple and dedicated tools that improve and facilitate not only data access, processing and visualization, but also a common language and knowledge exchange between developers, graphic designers and journalists so that data projects can been easily and more quickly processed and managed. This paper conceptually develops this idea.
