Diet Choice by Dairy Cows. 1. Selection of Feed Protein Content During the First Half of Lactation

TLDR
It is concluded that diet selection differed significantly from what would be considered random, which allowed cows in the choice group to perform well, however, diet choice did not reflect the estimated metabolizable protein requirements of the cows.

Voluntary food intake and diet selection in farm animals.

J. M. Forbes
TL;DR: Feeding behaviour feedback signals ruminant gastrointestinal tract metabolites and hormones central nervous control integrative theories of food intake control growth and fattening reproduction and lactation diet digestability and concentration of available energy specific nutrients affecting intake.
Journal ArticleDOI

Changes in feeding behavior as possible indicators for the automatic monitoring of health disorders in dairy cows.

TL;DR: Daily feeding time was the feeding characteristic that changed most consistently in relation to the studied disorders, which suggests that a system that monitors short-term feeding behavior can assist in the early identification of sick cows.
Journal ArticleDOI

The biologically relevant unit for the analysis of short-term feeding behavior of dairy cows.

TL;DR: The probability of cows ending and starting a meal increased with meal length and interval between meals, as predicted by the satiety concept, and meals are, therefore, a biologically relevant unit of short-term feeding behavior and visits are not.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diet selection and animal state: an integrative framework.

TL;DR: The present paper deals with the problems of explaining and predicting diet selection of animals under controlled conditions, i.e. conditions that can be described and in which any influences of the environment can be either controlled or at least monitored.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of nutrients on feed intake in ruminants.

TL;DR: The nutrients required for good microbial activity (proteins in the rumen) generally promote feed intake, whereas nutrients that disrupt rumen functioning (lipids) reduce feed intake.

The determination of chromic oxide in faeces samples by atomic absorption spectrophotometry

TL;DR: A rapid and accurate atomic absorption method for the determination of chromium in faeces samples from pasture experiments using chromic oxide "markers" is described in this article, where the effects of these interferences were overcome by adding calcium to the test solution and by the addition of silicate to the standards, which were prepared in ‘blank’ solutions.

Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of nutrition on stress and immunity in dairy cows and discussed the potential applications of GM technology on pig performance and piglet starter feeding in a changing business environment, with special emphasis on tryptophan and valine.

Recent advances in animal nutrition.

TL;DR: This research examines the effect of nutrition on stress and immunity, legislation affecting animal production systems, and potential applications of GM technology on pig performance in a changing business environment.
