TL;DR: The results for 1990 and 2010 supersede all previously published Global Burden of Disease results and highlight the importance of understanding local burden of disease and setting goals and targets for the post-2015 agenda taking such patterns into account.

TL;DR: This work states that connectivity among human populations, a key driver of pathogen dispersal, has increased sharply over the past century, along with the availability of data derived from mobile phones and other dynamic data sources.

TL;DR: These estimates raise concerns about the effects of continued CHIK spread in Colombia and other Latin-American countries and suggest that there will be significant acute and chronic disability and related costs in the short and long term for Latin American health care systems.
Abstract: Received 14 July 2015; revised 28 October 2015; accepted 2 November 2015Background: Chikungunya(CHIK)virusdiseaseisexpectedtobeaconsiderablecauseofdisabilityandeconomicburdeninLatinAmericagivenitschronicsequelae, particularlyitschronicinflammatoryrheumatism.Therehavebeen no previous studies assessing CHIK costs and disability in Latin America. Methods: We calculated incidence rates for CHIK during the 2014 outbreak in Colombia using epidemiologicaldata provided by the Colombian National Institute of Health, using demographic data from the NationalAdministrative Department of Statistics. The burden of disease was estimated through disability adjusted lifeyears (DALYs) lost and the costs were estimated based on the national recommendations for CHIK acute andchronic phase attention. Results: Therewereatotalof106592cases,withincidenceratesrangingfrom0to1837.3cases/100000popu-lation in different departments. An estimate was made of total DALYs lost of 40.44 to 45.14 lost/100 000 popu-lation. The 2014 outbreak estimated costs were at least US$73.6 million. Conclusions: Our estimates raise concerns about the effects of continued CHIK spread in Colombia and otherLatin-American countries. The lack of transmission control for this disease and potential for spread meansthat there will be significant acute and chronic disability and related costs in the short and long term for LatinAmerican health care systems. Keywords: Burden of illness, Chikungunya, Colombia, Disability, Illness cost, Latin America

TL;DR: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), this study observed a clear restitution of both activity and connectivity among auditory-motor regions of the affected hemisphere and confirmed MST as a viable intervention to improve motor function in chronic stroke individuals.
Abstract: Novel rehabilitation interventions have improved motor recovery by induction of neural plasticity in individuals with stroke. Of these, Music-supported therapy (MST) is based on music training designed to restore motor deficits. Music training requires multimodal processing, involving the integration and co-operation of visual, motor, auditory, affective and cognitive systems. The main objective of this study was to assess, in a group of 20 individuals suffering from chronic stroke, the motor, cognitive, emotional and neuroplastic effects of MST. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we observed a clear restitution of both activity and connectivity among auditory-motor regions of the affected hemisphere. Importantly, no differences were observed in this functional network in a healthy control group, ruling out possible confounds such as repeated imaging testing. Moreover, this increase in activity and connectivity between auditory and motor regions was accompanied by a functional improvement of the paretic hand. The present results confirm MST as a viable intervention to improve motor function in chronic stroke individuals.

  • ...Although mortality rates have been reduced in high-income countries, stroke is still the second most common cause of death worldwide (Feigin et al. 2014) and the third cause of disability-adjusted life-years (Murray et al. 2012)....

TL;DR: A better understanding is provided of human immune responses to S. scabiei in ordinary and crusted scabies phenotypes to provide a better understanding of the significant global impact of the disease.
Abstract: Scabies is a parasitic disease due to infestation of skin by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies is a major public health problem and endemic in resource poor communities worldwide affecting over 100 million people. Associated bacterial infections cause substantial morbidity, and in severe cases can lead to renal and cardiac diseases. Mite infestation of the skin causes localised cutaneous inflammation, pruritus, skin lesions, and allergic and inflammatory responses are mounted by the host against the mite and its products. Our current understanding of the immune and inflammatory responses associated with the clinical manifestations in scabies is far outweighed by the significant global impact of the disease. This review aims to provide a better understanding of human immune responses to S. scabiei in ordinary and crusted scabies phenotypes.

TL;DR: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 aimed to estimate annual deaths for the world and 21 regions between 1980 and 2010 for 235 causes, with uncertainty intervals (UIs), separately by age and sex, using the Cause of Death Ensemble model.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.
Abstract: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors;...generate assessments of numbers of deaths by cause that are consistent with the total numbers of deaths by age sex and region provided by demographers;...provide methodologies for and assessments of aggregate disease burden that combine--into the Disability-Adjusted Life Year or DALY measure--burden from premature mortality with that from living with disability; and...use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020." This first volume includes chapters summarizing results from the project as a whole. (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: Prevalence and severity of health loss were weakly correlated and age-specific prevalence of YLDs increased with age in all regions and has decreased slightly from 1990 to 2010, but population growth and ageing have increased YLD numbers and crude rates over the past two decades.
