TLDR
The results for 1990 and 2010 supersede all previously published Global Burden of Disease results and highlight the importance of understanding local burden of disease and setting goals and targets for the post-2015 agenda taking such patterns into account.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Is a Risk Factor for Barrett's Esophagus

TL;DR: In this case-control study, OSA was associated with an increased risk of BE, potentially through BMI and GERD independent mechanisms, and patients with OSA may benefit from evaluation for BE.
Journal ArticleDOI

Orally active antischistosomal early leads identified from the open access malaria box.

TL;DR: The two candidates identified by investigating the MMV malaria box are characterized by good pharmacokinetic profiles, low cytotoxic potential and easy chemistry and therefore offer an excellent starting point for antischistosomal drug discovery and development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pharmacological activities, mechanisms of action, and safety of salidroside in the central nervous system

TL;DR: It is evident that salidroside has potential use as a beneficial therapeutic medicine with high efficacy and low toxicity to the central nervous system, but the definite target protein molecules remain unclear and clinical trials regarding this are currently insufficient.
Journal ArticleDOI

Psychotic disorders induced by antiepileptic drugs in people with epilepsy.

TL;DR: The findings indicated that one in seven patients with epilepsy who developed psychosis had antiepileptic drug-induced psychotic disorder, and female gender, temporal lobe involvement and current use of levetiracetam were significantly associated with antiePleptic drug induced psychotic disorder compared to other types of psychosis, while carbamazepine had a negative association.

Global and regional mortality from 235 causes of death for 20 age groups in 1990 and 2010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010

Rafael Lozano, +195 more
- 15 Dec 2012 -
TL;DR: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 aimed to estimate annual deaths for the world and 21 regions between 1980 and 2010 for 235 causes, with uncertainty intervals (UIs), separately by age and sex, using the Cause of Death Ensemble model.
Book

The global burden of disease: a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from diseases injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.

Years lived with disability (YLDs) for 1160 sequelae of 289 diseases and injuries 1990-2010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010

Theo Vos, +363 more
- 15 Dec 2012 -
TL;DR: Prevalence and severity of health loss were weakly correlated and age-specific prevalence of YLDs increased with age in all regions and has decreased slightly from 1990 to 2010, but population growth and ageing have increased YLD numbers and crude rates over the past two decades.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global mortality, disability, and the contribution of risk factors: Global Burden of Disease Study

TL;DR: The three leading contributors to the burden of disease are communicable and perinatal disorders affecting children, and the substantial burdens of neuropsychiatric disorders and injuries are under-recognised.
