Dutch nursing students’ knowledge and attitudes towards older people - A longitudinal cohort study

02 Feb 2012-Journal of Nursing Education and Practice-Vol. 2, Iss: 2, pp 1
TL;DR: Nursing students are not well prepared for working with predominately older people and revision and improvement in the curricula might be needed to enhance the knowledge and attitudes of the Dutch nursing students.
Abstract: Background: Due to changing demographics in the population, the majority of current nursing students will work mostlywith older people after graduation. It is known that most nursing student have little knowledge and interests in workingwith older people. There is a growing need for motivated nurses to provide care for older people as the quality of care isinfluenced by their attitudes. The objective of this study is to investigate Dutch nursing students’ knowledge of andattitudes toward older people and their willingness to work with older people and how this knowledge and attitudeschanges after three years education. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study with follow-up among 113 first-year Dutch nursing students pursuing a Bachelor’sdegree was conducted. Data for this study was collected with three instruments. Knowledge of the first-year students wasassessed with Palmore’s Facts on Aging Quiz. Students’ attitudes were measured with the Aging Semantic Differentialscale and Kogan’s Attitudes toward Older People scale. The same measurements were also obtained three years later whenthey were fourth-year nursing students. The first data collection started in 2005. The follow-up period took place between2008 and 2009. Results: The results show that the nursing students have a moderate knowledge level about older people: first-yearstudents answered less than half of the questions correctly and after three years, almost half of the questions were answeredproperly. The attitude of the students toward older people on the ASD changed from slightly negative to neutral after threeyears of education. The attitude of nursing students on the OP changed from moderately neutral to slightly positive. Fewfirst and fourth-year students (2.7% and 3.7%) were interested in working with older people after their nursing education. Most students (72.8%) indicated that working with older people would be as satisfying as working with younger people. Conclusion: Nursing students are not well prepared for working with predominately older people. Education should focuson increasing positive working experiences with older people. Revision and improvement in the curricula might be neededto enhance the knowledge and attitudes of the Dutch nursing students.

TL;DR: Providing students with specific curricular content and employing a structured approach to preparation for work placement could help build a more positive perception of community care, leading to more students seeing/choosing community care as a desirable field of work.

TL;DR: This research has found that the attitude towards the elderly, the knowledge about aging, and gratitude showed correlation with care willingness, and the nursing students' knowledge about Aging had a direct influence on their care willingness.

TL;DR: The results suggested that positive attitudes toward older people exist; despite this, it is obvious that more efforts are required to enhance these attitudes.
Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of nursing and medical students toward older people in Turkey. Method: This was a cross-sectional and comparative descriptive study. The Turkish version of Kogan’s Old People Scale was used to evaluate attitudes toward older people among 618 students. Results: Medical students showed more positive attitudes toward older people than nursing students. Students who were females, whose economic income was less than expenditure, and who were not interested in working with older people after graduation showed less positive attitudes. Conclusion: The results suggested that positive attitudes toward older people exist; despite this, it is obvious that more efforts are required to enhance these attitudes. Implications for Practice: Revision and improvement in curricula are needed to enhance the attitudes of students toward older people, and lecturers in schools should further consider the need to prepare students for their roles as caregivers for thi...

TL;DR: The characteristics of older people are likely to be increasingly heterogeneous within nations as discussed by the authors, and older populations also have increased because of worldwide improvements in health services educational status and economic development.
Abstract: One purpose of this report then is to look at past current and projected numbers proportions and growth rates of older populations. Older populations also have increased because of worldwide improvements in health services educational status and economic development. The characteristics of older people are likely to be increasingly heterogeneous within nations. A second purpose of An Aging World: 2008 is to summarize socioeconomic statistics for both developed and developing nations. Comparable data are included for as many as 52 nations when the categories are reasonably consistent. In 2008 these 52 nations (Appendix Table B-1) contained 77 percent of the world’s total population. (Excerpt)

TL;DR: These findings suggest that interventions to increase the number of geriatric-oriented physicians should focus on influencing learners' attitudes through experiences in the care of older adults.
Abstract: Purpose This study examined medical students' interest in geriatrics: Are knowledge, positive attitudes, and prior experience with older adults associated with an interest in geriatric medicine? Design and methods Entering University of Michigan medical students completed three surveys: the Revised Facts on Aging Quiz, the University of California at Los Angeles Geriatric Attitudes Scale, and the Maxwell-Sullivan Attitudes Scale. The students were also asked questions about their prior experience with older adults and their interest in geriatric medicine. Results The results indicate that incoming medical students have minimal knowledge about aging, moderately positive attitudes toward older adults, and low interest in geriatric medicine. Having more positive attitudes toward older adults (ss =.28) and having cared for older persons prior to medical school (ss =.14) were associated with greater interest in geriatric medicine. Implications These findings suggest that interventions to increase the number of geriatric-oriented physicians should focus on influencing learners' attitudes through experiences in the care of older adults.
