The paper describes two dynamic monitoring systems installed in civil engineering structures, a footbridge and a suspended stadium roof. These systems are used for characterization of environmental and operational effects and, in the limit, for the early detection of damage. Some examples of collected data and results are presented.read more

Structural health monitoring and damage assessment Part I: A critical review of approaches and methods
Burcu Gunes,Oguz Gunes +1 more
TL;DR: A critical review of the damage assessment methodologies based on the research and applications reported in the literature is presented in this paper, where challenges and research gaps in SHM are emphasized, including optimization of the number and location of sensors, identification of features sensitive to small damage levels, ability to discriminate changes in these features caused by damage from those caused by changing environmental or test conditions, and development of statistical methods to discriminate features from structures in undamaged and damaged states.

Experimental and numerical investigations for the structural characterization of a historic RC arch bridge
TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive rational methodology for the structural assessment of existing bridges is presented and specifically applied to a historic reinforced concrete arch bridge, which is based on the use of non-destructive testing tools and structural model updating procedures and involves: (a) preliminary documented research and on-site geometric surveys (aimed at collecting information on the "as built" geometry); (b) ambient vibration testing performed by using a grid of conventional high-sensitivity accelerometers, aimed specifically at investigating the vertical dynamic characteristics of the bridge and c) development of an updated Finite

Investigation of Time Series Representations and Similarity Measures for Structural Damage Pattern Recognition
TL;DR: Both model-based time series representation and dimensionality reduction methods are studied to compare the effectiveness of feature extraction for damage pattern recognition and simulation results show that bothTime series representation methods and similarity measures have significant impact on the pattern recognition success rate.

Repeatable part authentication using impedance based analysis for side-channel monitoring
Tomilayo Komolafe,Wenmeng Tian,Gregory T. Purdy,Mohammad I. Albakri,Pablo A. Tarazaga,Jaime A. Camelio +5 more
TL;DR: This work presents a novel approach to improve the resilience of a manufacturing enterprise via side channels, specifically using electromechanical impedance signatures measured by piezoelectric transducers (PZTs) to verify if a part conforms to its design intent.
