Effect of integrated nutrient management practices on productivity of durumm wheat (Triticum durum) in the Vertisols of central India

Abstract: An experiment was conducted during 2000-01 and 2001-02 on fine-textured Vertisols at Indore to study the effect of combined use of farmyard manure and poultry manure with 50 and 100% NPK on productivity, grain quality and profitability of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.). The grain yield of durum wheat was significantly increased with integrated use of 50% or 100% NPK + poultry manure @ 2.5 tonnes/ha or farmyard manure @ 10 tonnes/ha compared with inorganic fertilizers alone. The yield improvement was 13.5 and 22.9% and 11.4 and 14.5 % with farmyard manure and poultry manure at 50 and 100% recommended NPK respectively over the sole application of inorganic. The highest productivity was obtained when these organic sources were applied along with 100% NPK, indicating that NPK fertilizers alone did not provide adequate and balanced nutrition to realize the potential yield of the crop. Quality parameters of durum grains, viz protein content and hectolitre weight increased, while yellow berry content decreased with increasing levels of NPK compared with control. Sole application of inorganic fertilizers was equally efficient with their combined use with organics in improving the quality parameters.

Abstract: A field experiment on integrated use of fertilizers and manures with foliar application of iron in barley {Hordeum vulgare (L.)} was conducted at Jobner on loamy sand soil during two consecutive rabi seasons of 2009–10 and 2010–11. Results of the study revealed that application of 50% RDF + VC @ 2 t/ha recorded significant increase in dry matter accumulation (DMA)/metre row length (364.5 g), yield attributes viz., spike length (10 cm), number of spikes/metre row length (81.6), grains/spike (48.9) and test weight (43.0 g) as well as grain (5.48 t/ha) and straw yield (7.85 t/ha). Application of 50% RDF + VC @ 2 t/ha also recorded significantly higher total uptake of N (111.1 kg/ha), P ((20.1 kg/ha), K (28.1 kg/ha), and Fe (8,399 g/ha) by barley. Application of 0.5% FeSO4 as foliar spray at tillering + flowering stages resulted in significantly higher dry matter accumulation (342.1 g), higher yield attributes and grain (5.27 t/ha) and straw yield (7.37 t/ha) with higher total nutrient uptake. Interactive effect on grain yield was found significant between fertilizers, organic manure and foliar spray of iron. Application of 50% RDF + VC @ 2 t/ha along with foliar application of iron 0.5% FeSO4 at tillering + flowering stage gave significantly higher yield over control.

Abstract: Ethiopia is the second largest wheat producer, after South Africa, in Sub-Saharan Africa. Wheat is one of the major staple crops in the country in terms of both production and consumption. In terms of caloric intake, it is the second--most important food in the country behind maize. Research on nutritional aspects relating to wheat cultivation is abundant and is documented comprehensively. Studies being carried out at different locations in Ethiopia indicated that application of all the needy nutrients through chemical fertilizers have deterious effect on soil health leading to unsustainable yields. Therefore; there is a need to improve nutrient supply system in terms of integrated nutrient management involving the use of chemical fertilizers in conjunction with organic manures coupled with input through biological processes. However, the role of major nutrients on crop physiology and the effect of these nutrients on growth, quality, yield and yield components of cereal crops in general and wheat in particular are unsatisfactory. Above all, the role of balanced fertilizer is the application of essential plant nutrients in light proportion and in optimum quantity for a specific soil crop condition in alleviating the yield, quality and its attributes of wheat production is important. In association with this, research on integrated nutrient management in wheat and its effect on growth, yield, yield components and quality parameters are significance. The literature pertaining to these lines of research in wheat is presented in an elaborative way and is reviewed in this paper. Keywords: Integrated nutrient management, FYM, Chemical fertilizer

Abstract: At global level, India ranks as second largest wheat producing nation and contributing approximately 11.9% to the world wheat production from about 12% of global area (USDA, 2010). The area under wheat throughout the world as well as in India has become nearly constant around 217.9 million ha and 26.9 million ha respectively. Wheat contributes about 30% of total grain production in India (Economic Survey, 2007).Long time studies being carried out at several locations in India indicated that application of all the needy nutrients through chemical fertilizers have deterious effect on soil health leading to unsustainable yields. During 2008-09, India produced a record wheat production of 80.58 million tones. One of the major constraints in boosting up the wheat production is the deterious effect on soil health. Therefore; there is a need to improve nutrient supply system in terms of integrated nutrient management involving the use of chemical fertilizers in conjunction with organic manures coupled with input through biological processes. Balanced fertilizer is the application of essential plant nutrients in light proportion and in optimum quantity for a specific soil crop condition. Continuous imbalanced use of fertilizer led to the deterioration in the soil fertility and decrease in soil productivity. Higher yield at balanced nutrition safe guard soil fertility. Integrated plant nutrient supply system could help in meeting the goals of balanced fertilization. The research findings on various aspects of the integrated nutrient management on wheat are reviewed.          Â
