Effect of sursulf treatment on fatigue life of medium carbon steel spur gears

01 Jan 1989-Mechanism and Machine Theory (Pergamon)-Vol. 24, Iss: 6, pp 493-498
TL;DR: In this paper, a back-to-back gear test rig was used to evaluate contact stress-pitting life curves for both untreated and Sursulf treated conditions, and wear particle analysis of lubricating oil was carried out to analyse the nature of failure.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a 5CrNiMo die sulphonitrocarburizing heat treatment process, in which the surface hardness of the die is improved, so that the die cannot deform easily, and the service life is prolonged by 60% or above.
Abstract: The invention relates to a heat treatment process of a forging die, in particular to a 5CrNiMo die sulphonitrocarburizing heat treatment process. The provided 5CrNiMo die sulphonitrocarburizing heat treatment process comprises the following process steps: conventional heat treatment, finish turning, preheating, salt bath, tempering and the like. On the basis of conventional heat treatment, a 5CrNiMo hot work die steel is subjected to salt bath so that sulphonitrocarburizing of the 5CrNiMo hot work die steel is finished, when the salt bath lasts for 1 hours, the thickness of a sulphonitrocarburizing layer can reach 0.1 mm, when the salt bath lasts for 2 hours, the thickness of the sulphonitrocarburizing layer can reach 0.2 mm, and the surface hardness of the die is improved. Compared with a gas nitriding heat treatment mode, the 5CrNiMo die sulphonitrocarburizing heat treatment process has the characteristics that the surface hardness of the die is improved, so that the die cannot deform easily, and the service life is prolonged by 60% or above.
