Abstract: The cholesterol-lowering effect of foods with added plant sterols or stanols consumed as snacks might be compromised. The purpose of this study was to confirm the cholesterol-lowering efficacy of a specially formulated cereal-based snack bar with added plant stanol ester (1.6 g plant stanols/day) when consumed between meals twice a day. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 4-week parallel-design study, 71 mildly to moderately hypercholesterolemic subjects were randomized into one of two groups, stanol or placebo group. Subjects were advised to replace their ordinary snacks with test products in an isocaloric manner and otherwise keep their habitual diet unchanged. The study showed that a snack bar product with added plant stanol ester lowered LDL and non-HDL cholesterol by 8.6% and 9.2% (mean%-change), respectively, as compared to the placebo product. The change in LDL cholesterol was statistically significantly different () between the groups while the change in HDL cholesterol or triglycerides did not differ between the groups. In conclusion, the cereal-based snack bar with added plant stanol ester ingested without a meal reduced LDL cholesterol significantly without affecting HDL cholesterol or triglyceride concentrations in mildly hypercholesterolemic men and women. Abstract: Increasing awareness of the relationship between diet and disease has prompted a notable increase in nutrition research. The focus of many of these studies continues to be on amount and type of fat in the diet. At the same time, a great deal of attention is being directed at other dietary components and their mode of action. The results are promising. More definitive answers must await future clinical trial data. However, the total dietary approach, including compliance measures, remains the foundation on which other nutrition recommendations should be based.

Abstract: Objective: The objective of this paper is to review prospective, large-scale studies of lipid-lowering therapy and hormone replacement therapy, and to provide clinical recommendations for the management of hyperlipidemia in women within the context of the revised National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) guidelines. Methods: Recent English language literature derived from a MEDLINE search (January 1990-July 2001) and bibliographies of relevant papers were reviewed, and data were abstracted from identified papers. Results: Hyperlipidemia is largely undertreated in women. Previously, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was considered first-line treatment for the management of hypercholesterolemia to prevent coronary artery disease (CAD) in women. Recent studies, however, show no benefit of HRT for secondary prevention of coronary events, despite its beneficial effects on lipids. Abstract: Molecular nutrition is becoming an increasingly important scientific discipline of human nutrition. The systematic dissection of food into its molecular components follo wed by studying individual molecules in animal model systems and humans to investigate their nutritional and health benefits is evolving rapidly. The identification, production and marketing of these food-derived bioactives will not only have a significant impact on the development of new regimens for disease treatments but will lead the way into a new era of preventing or postponing the onset of severe chronic diseases. Sound scientific principles, rigorous clinical trials, and science -based regulatory processes will facilitate and help to define a new space in diet and dietary compound-based management of health and disease conditions. Our understanding of the biology of a diverse number of living species, ranging from microbes to humans and plants has grown tremendously during the last century and particularly during the last decade. Chemistry and genetics have provided a solid foundation for understanding the metabolic processes which play a pivotal role in maintaining the growth and health of living systems as well as interactions between the environment, food, genetics and health. The advent of mo lecular biology and modern biotechnology has vastly facilitated the process understanding the molecular and genetic basis of a wide range of physiological reactions and our ability to translate this rapidly growing knowledge into meaningful products for our society. Just about twenty years ago, introduction and expression of single genes in microbes, and complex multicellular organisms like plants and animals, was considered a feat that could only be accomplished in a few specialized laboratories around the world. Today, we are beginning to gain insights into the genetic make -up of a whole host of living organisms including bacteria, plants, animals, and humans – to identify and understand the specific genes and their corresponding gene products, and their respective contributions to health, disease, or disease initiation states in humans. We also are beginning to understand their contributions to yield and productivity in plants and productivity of fermentation systems. Abstract: THE SECOND report of the Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (Adult Treatment Panel II, or ATP II) presents the National Cholesterol Education Program's updated recommendations for cholesterol management. It is similar to the first in general outline, and the fundamental approach to treatment of high blood cholesterol is comparable. This report continues to identify low-density lipoproteins (LDL) as the primary target of cholesterol-lowering therapy. As in the first report, the second report emphasizes the role of the clinical approach in primary prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD). Dietary therapy remains the first line of treatment of high blood cholesterol, and drug therapy is reserved for patients who are considered to be at high risk for CHD. Abstract: Background Dietary plant sterols, especially sitostanol, reduce serum cholesterol by inhibiting cholesterol absorption. Soluble sitostanol may be more effective than a less soluble preparation. We tested the tolerability and cholesterol-lowering effect of margarine containing sitostanol ester in a population with mild hypercholesterolemia. Methods We conducted a one-year, randomized, double-blind study in 153 randomly selected subjects with mild hypercholesterolemia. Fifty-one consumed margarine without sitostanol ester (the control group), and 102 consumed margarine containing sitostanol ester (1.8 or 2.6 g of sitostanol per day). Results The margarine containing sitostanol ester was well tolerated. The mean one-year reduction in serum cholesterol was 10.2 percent in the sitostanol group, as compared with an increase of 0.1 percent in the control group.
