In this paper, the characteristics of a gaseous discharge have been studied in the presence of a localised transverse magnetic field applied to a discharge tube, and the breakdown voltage and the post breakdown discharge current are found to be dependent on the strength and the position of the applied magnetic field.Abstract:
The characteristics of a gaseous discharge have been studied in the presence of a localised transverse magnetic field applied to a discharge tube. The breakdown voltage and the post breakdown discharge current are found to be dependent on the strength and the position of the applied magnetic field. The position of the magnetic field at which the electrical parameters of the gaseous discharge are more sensitive to the magnetic field has been identified to be very near the cathode end of the negative glow. All the experimental observations in this study have been explained consistently taking into consideration the complexity of the electrical conduction in the presence of the localised magnetic field.read more

A Theory of Spark Discharge
TL;DR: In this article, the breakdown of a uniform field is considered to occur by the transition of an electron avalanche proceeding from cathode to anode into a self-propagating streamer, which develops from anode to cathode, forming a conducting filament between the electrodes.

TL;DR: In this article, an expression for the first Townsend ionization coefficient in uniform crossed electric and magnetic fields was obtained, which is in better agreement with observation than previous theoretical expressions, although the value for the equivalent pressure obtained in this analysis differs from the values given by earlier authors.
