Abstract: A set of factors has converged to create geopolitical issues of great importance in contemporary Spain. These relate as much to the incorporation of Spain in the process of globalization as to the internal organization of the Spanish State. This chapter examines the contribution of Spanish academic geography in the first two decades of this century to research and debate in the field of political geography. The chapter has been prepared on the basis of a systematic review of the main Spanish academic journals in the field, as well as references to a very considerable bibliography. The chapter comprises five sections: the introduction presents the importance of geopolitical factors in contemporary Spain and states the hypothesis and methodology adopted to develop the chapter; the second section looks at the output of Spanish academic geography on the geopolitical position of the Iberian countries with respect to various geographical areas; the third focuses on studies concerning the borders of the Spanish state; the fourth section examines the work dealing with the institutional organization of what the 1978 Spanish Constitution calls ‘nationalities and regions’; and finally, the fifth section homes in on research into the spatial aspects of local and metropolitan governments. The chapter is then rounded off by a few brief conclusions.

Abstract: One of the basic territorial strategies that it has outlined the rural space is in adapting its services and infrastructures to get a competitive territory, attractive for the localization and development of activities that improve the economic-productive system. A space endowed with the services and infrastructures able to adapt to the necessities and their inhabitants’ demands, where the quality of life this closely linked to the quality of their environment.

TL;DR: The impact of Politicas de Desarrollo Rural LEADER and PRODER en Extremadura, a region eminentemente rural, was analyzed in this paper.
Abstract: Resumen: En este trabajo se analizan los impactos de las Politicas de Desarrollo Rural LEADER y PRODER en una region eminentemente rural y desde el ano 1991, fecha de su implantacion hasta la actualidad. La metodologia empleada ha sido un analisis multivariante de componentes principales con las principales variables territoriales y socioeconomicas de estos territorios anadiendose las de Gestion de estas Politicas de Desarrollo como son las inversiones, proyectos, empleo y actividades economicas. Ademas se han introducido en un Sistema de Informacion Geografica para poder representarlas en el territorio. Las conclusiones extraidas de este analisis son la extraccion de unos modelos de desarrollo diferentes condicionados por sus estructuras territoriales y socioeconomicas pero que, ayudadas por la gestion de estas politicas, han posibilitado la estabilizacion regresiva de la poblacion en Extremadura durante los ultimos 20 anos y el freno de las sangrias emigratorias caracteristicas de decadas precedentes.
