TL;DR: In this paper, a survey was conducted among 435 undergraduate students residing in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico, during the second semester of 2020, and positive correlations with small to moderate and statistically significant magnitudes were found between the various uses of digital media and their political practices.
Abstract: In a predominantly digital communicative context, the political practices of young university students are relevant for the vitality of public spheres and the consolidation of participatory democracy. The objective of this study was to learn how the use of digital media relates to the political talk and participation practices of university students. Using quota sampling, a survey was conducted among 435 undergraduate students residing in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico, during the second semester of 2020. Among these students with favorable access to digital media, positive correlations with small to moderate and statistically significant magnitudes were found between the various uses of digital media and their political practices. News use was moderately correlated with political talk, as was social use with politically motivated activities, and creative use with all forms of participation. Political talk mainly affected the relationship between participation and news use. These findings support the relevance of the active role of young people in their political socialization, as social interaction and content creation were more closely correlated with political participation than news consumption was, which was more beneficial to participation when articulated through political talk.

TL;DR: In this article, the role of political advertising, the Internet, and political discussion in civic and political life has been investigated, and an O-S-R-O-R (orientationsstimuli-reasoning-orientations-responses) framework has been proposed.
Abstract: Political communication researchers have devoted a great deal of attention to the role of political advertising, the Internet, and political discussion in civic and political life. In this article, we integrate and extend this research by developing a campaign communication mediation model of civic and campaign participation. Two data sets are merged for this inquiry: (a) content-coded ad-buy data on the placement of campaign messages on a market-by-market and program-by-program basis and (b) a national panel study concerning patterns of traditional and digital media consumption and levels of civic and campaign participation. Exposure to televised campaign advertising is estimated by developing an algorithm based on the market and program placement of specific ads and geocoded survey respondents’ viewing of certain categories of television content in which these ads were concentrated. Structural equation models reveal that advertising exposure drives online news use in ways that complement conventional news influences on political discussion and political messaging. However, campaign exposure emphasizing ‘‘attack’’ messages appears to diminish information seeking motivations via broadcast and print media, yet only indirectly and weakly suppresses participation in civic and political life. Further, alternative specifications reveal that our original model produces the best fit, empirically and theoretically. We use these insights to propose an O-S-R-O-R (orientations-stimuli-reasoning-orientations-responses) framework as an alternative to the longstanding O-S-O-R model in communication and social psychology.

TL;DR: The aim is to prove if the so-called social networks are a new type of media, a new platform for social relationships and post-media contents, which look more like the audiovisual media than the traditional newspapers.
Abstract: The fast and successful penetration in society of the so-called social networks in the past two or three years has alarmed the traditional media. The new phenomenon reaches a wider audience, enhances advertising, achieves customization, and breaches some of the barriers of traditional media. The new communication channel is used already by millions of Internet users as their main source of information and entertainment. This research paper analyses the structure of eleven global social networks, which feature contents in Spanish and other languages, in relation to the electronic version (e- version) of the main Spanish newspapers. The aim is to prove if the so-called social networks are a new type of media, a new platform for social relationships and post-media contents, which look more like the audiovisual media than the traditional newspapers.

Abstract: . Studies of political participation have traditionally differentiated conventional from non-conventional, legal from illegal, modes of participation. In this paper we to develop a more complex scheme, using the technique of multidimensional scaling (MDS). We look at the perceptions that individuals hold about different forms of political participation that range from voting to armed violence and include other legal or illegal manifestations. The results show the existence of two meaningful underlying dimensions. The first relates to ‘within-system’versus ‘out-of-system’activities; the second relates to ‘progressive’versus ‘conservative’activities. A cluster analysis is then used to develop a typology of political participation.

TL;DR: In this paper, an analisis of the determinantes of participación politica in Mexico distintos del vote is presented, that van desde firma de peticiones, manifestaciones, huelgas, bloqueos de calles, tomas de edificios publicos or actos that involucran agresiones personales.

TL;DR: In this paper, the discriminant power of political interest, political knowledge, political efficacy and political confidence among the different modes of political participation (non-participation, conventional participation and non-conventional participation) of young people in Cordoba/Argentina was established.
Abstract: The main purpose of the research is to establish the discriminant power of political interest, political knowledge, political efficacy and political confidence among the different modes of political participation (non-participation, conventional participation and non-conventional participation) of young people in Cordoba/Argentina. 300 young people from 18 to 30 years old – choiced by a non random sampling – give his consent to participate in the study. A discriminant analysis with 3-groups was applied to all the psycho-social variables. The obtained results allow developing a model in wich all sociocognitives variables (but external efficacy and political confidence) have a good discriminatory power of the different modes of political participation. Furthermore, the paper discusses differentiated sociocognitives profiles of young people who participate in politics.
