TLDR
The authors have measured the electro-optic Kerr effect in the isotropic phase of a urea derivative and found that optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is easily observable in the low-temperature region on applying an electric field, whereas SHG activity does not emerge in the higher-tem temperature region.Abstract:
The authors have measured the electro-optic Kerr effect in the isotropic phase of a urea derivative. Electric-field-induced birefringence $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}n$ was observed in the isotropic phase even $30\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\mathrm{C}$ above the isotropic-columnar phase transition temperature. The induced birefringence is inversely proportional to temperature, as predicted by the Landau--de Gennes theory. Two distinct regions are identified from the proportionality constants in the isotropic phase; optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is easily observable in the low-temperature region on applying an electric field, whereas SHG activity does not emerge in the higher-temperature region. The structure of molecular assemblies is discussed based on these experimental results.read more

Inclusion of Mass Density Fluctuations in the Landau-de Gennes Theory of Nematic-Isotropic Phase Transition
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors incorporated the mass density gradients into the Landau-de Gennes theory of nematic-isotropic transition, and obtained a correction term for the Kerr constant B in isotropic phase proportional to 1/(T − T ∗)2, where T∗ is the virtual transition temperature.

Relation between the Spontaneous Polarization and Alkyl Chain Length in Ferroelectric Switching of Columnar Liquid-Crystalline Ureas
TL;DR: In this paper, the spontaneous polarization and alkyl chain length were investigated in ferroelectric switching of N,N′-bis (3,4,5-trialkoxyphenyl)urea (1-7) possessing n-C4H9, n-c8H17, N-C9H19, C10H21, C11H23, C12H25, and C16H33, respectively, and it was strongly suggested that the switching current peaks originated in switching of the polar columns, not in the movement of

TL;DR: In this paper, the insertion of polar columns into the Ar-N bonds of bis(N,N′-(3,4,5-trialkoxyphenyl)ureas 4(R = C12H25) was performed, and the compounds with X = OCH2, OCO, NH2CH2 and NHCO, N(CH3)CH2 exhibited a CLC phase.
