TL;DR: Annoyance related to electrical and/or chemical factors was common in a Swedish population and the association with subjective health and functional capacity increased with severity of annoyance, which suggests that there is some connection between environmental annoyance, well-being andfunctional capacity.

TL;DR: The prevalence of symptoms in the Swedish population was found to accord with results in studies based on different kinds of samples, and SBS symptoms, skin symptoms, and symptoms similar to those reported by individuals with ``electric hypersensitivity'' were significantly more prevalent among employees with extensive VDU usage.
Abstract: Aims: Health problems associated with indoor environments have been reported and discussed extensively during the past few decades, not least in Sweden. There is, however, great uncertainty concerning the background prevalence of the symptoms in question. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of general, mucosal, and skin symptoms in the Swedish population. Methods: A survey comprising 3,000 randomly selected Swedes, age 18—64, was carried out. The survey addressed 25 symptoms, principally general, mucosal, and skin symptoms. A number of other areas were covered and individual data registered at Statistics Sweden were added. The response rate was 70% (2,154 cases). Results: The prevalence of symptoms in the Swedish population was found to accord with results in studies based on different kinds of samples. Women reported significantly more single symptoms, as well as sets of symptoms, than men. There was no clear connection between age and symptoms. The prevalence of sym...

TL;DR: A summary of the knowledge on astroglial-neuronal interaction in glutamate neurotransmission is given in this article, focusing on the contribution of astroglia to synaptic dynamics.
Abstract: This is a summary of the knowledge on astroglial-neuronal interaction in glutamate neurotransmission, especially focusing on astroglial contributions to synaptic dynamics. It briefly addresses different topics such as membrane receptors and signal transduction systems on astroglia and the expression of some ion channels and glutamate carriers.

TL;DR: The hypothesis put forward here suggests that the primary function of mGlu receptors is to set the signal-to-noise ratio and thereby filter out unimportant or amplify important information.

TL;DR: Individuals with high critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) responded with a pronounced attenuation of EEG alpha waves, and an increase in speed and decrease in accuracy of performance when the light was powered by conventional and high-frequency ballasts.
Abstract: In working environments all over the world, fluorescent tubes are by far the dominating light source. Still, there have been very few studies on the impact of the non-visible flicker from fluorescent tubes. The purpose of the study was to compare the impact on subjective well-being, performance and physiological arousal of fluorescent light powered by conventional and high-frequency ballasts. Thirty-seven healthy males and females were subjected to either condition in a laboratory office on two separate occasions with 1 week in between. Although the methodology was quite extensive, only a few general effects were observed. However, when the light was powered by the conventional ballasts, individuals with high critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) responded with a pronounced attenuation of EEG alpha waves, and an increase in speed and decrease in accuracy of performance. These results may be understood in terms of heightened arousal in the central nervous system in response to the pronounced light modulation caused by the conventional ballasts. In order to alleviate this potential stress source, it is recommended that fluorescent lighting be powered by electronic high-frequency ballasts of good quality.

We found a significant correlation between suicide locations and the measured power-frequency magnetic field strength. Significantly more suicides oc

TL;DR: Female gender, asthmalrhinitis, paper and VDT work were related to an increased prevalence of SBS symptoms and the prevalence of facial skin symptoms increased markedly with the amount of V DT work.
Abstract: The prevalence of symptoms compatible with the Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) was measured in a questionnaire study among 4 943 office workers. An assessment of the relation between SBS symptoms and personal, physical and psychosocial exposure factors was made. In contrast to males, the majority of females were lower-grade staff Females reported annoyance from physical climate factors more often, both at work and at home. Males reported a better psychosocial situation than females. Female gender, asthmalrhinitis, paper and VDT work were related to an increased prevalence of SBS symptoms. The prevalence of facial skin symptoms increased markedly with the amount of VDT work. Psychosocial workload intensifid this relation. Inequalities in physical climate and psychosocial conditions associated with different positions held in the offices can be of importance for the increased occurrence of symptoms among females.
