Abstract: Aims: Health problems associated with indoor environments have been reported and discussed extensively during the past few decades, not least in Sweden. There is, however, great uncertainty concerning the background prevalence of the symptoms in question. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of general, mucosal, and skin symptoms in the Swedish population. Methods: A survey comprising 3,000 randomly selected Swedes, age 18—64, was carried out. The survey addressed 25 symptoms, principally general, mucosal, and skin symptoms. A number of other areas were covered and individual data registered at Statistics Sweden were added. The response rate was 70% (2,154 cases). Results: The prevalence of symptoms in the Swedish population was found to accord with results in studies based on different kinds of samples. Abstract: Two double-blind laboratory-based studies were performed to determine whether a suppression of nocturnal melatonin similar to that observed in rodents occurs when humans are exposed to magnetic fields at night. In study 1, 33 men were exposed to sham, 10 mG, or 200 mG intermittent, circularly polarized magnetic fields from 2300 to 0700 h under controlled environmental and exposure test conditions. Overall, exposure had no effect on melatonin levels. Men with preexisting low levels of melatonin, however, showed significantly greater suppression of melatonin when they were exposed to light and also when they were exposed to the 200 mG magnetic-field condition. Study 2 directly tested the hypothesis that low-melatonin subjects show enhanced sensitivity when exposed to light and to 200 mG magnetic fields. After preexposure screening, each of 40 men slept in the exposure facility on two nights. On one night, the men were sham exposed. On the other night, they were exposed to the 200 mG field condition used previously. Again, exposure had no overall effect on melatonin levels. The original finding of enhanced sensitivity in low-melatonin subjects was not replicated in this study. We conclude that the intermittent exposure conditions used in these two studies were not effective in altering nocturnal melatonin release patterns in human volunteers. Further research is underway with regard to exposure parameters, hormonal and immune system measures, and individual differences.

Abstract: In an hypothesis-generating case-control study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, lifetime occupational histories were obtained. The patients (n = 28) were clinic based. The occupational exposure of interest in this report is electromagnetic fields (EMFs). This is the first and so far the only exposure analyzed in this study. Occupational exposure up to 2 years prior to estimated disease symptom onset was used for construction of exposure indices for cases. Controls (n = 32) were blood and nonblood relatives of cases. Occupational exposure for controls was through the same age as exposure for the corresponding cases. Twenty (71%) cases and 28 (88%) controls had at least 20 years of work experience covering the exposure period. The occupational history and task data were used to classify blindly each occupation for each subject as having high, medium/high, medium, medium/low, or low EMF exposure, based primarily on data from an earlier and unrelated study designed to obtain occupational EMF exposure information on workers in ``electrical`` and ``nonelectrical`` jobs. By using the length of time each subject spent in each occupation through the exposure period, two indices of exposure were constructed: total occupational exposure (E{sub 1}) and average occupational exposure (E{sub 2}). For cases andmore » controls with at least 20 years of work experience, the odds ratio (OR) for exposure at the 75th percentile of the E{sub 1} case exposure data relative to minimum exposure was 7.5 (P < 0.02; 95% CI, 1.4--38.1) and the corresponding OR for E{sub 2} was 5.5 (P < 0.02; 95% CI, 1.3--22.5). For all cases and controls, the ORs were 2.5 (P < 0.1; 95% CI, 0.9--8.1) for E{sub 1} and 2.3 (P = 0.12; 95% CI, 0.8--6.6) for E{sub 2}. This study should be considered an hypothesis-generating study. Larger studies, using incident cases and improved exposure assessment, should be undertaken.« less
