TL;DR: Annoyance related to electrical and/or chemical factors was common in a Swedish population and the association with subjective health and functional capacity increased with severity of annoyance, which suggests that there is some connection between environmental annoyance, well-being andfunctional capacity.

TL;DR: The prevalence of symptoms in the Swedish population was found to accord with results in studies based on different kinds of samples, and SBS symptoms, skin symptoms, and symptoms similar to those reported by individuals with ``electric hypersensitivity'' were significantly more prevalent among employees with extensive VDU usage.
Abstract: Aims: Health problems associated with indoor environments have been reported and discussed extensively during the past few decades, not least in Sweden. There is, however, great uncertainty concerning the background prevalence of the symptoms in question. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of general, mucosal, and skin symptoms in the Swedish population. Methods: A survey comprising 3,000 randomly selected Swedes, age 18—64, was carried out. The survey addressed 25 symptoms, principally general, mucosal, and skin symptoms. A number of other areas were covered and individual data registered at Statistics Sweden were added. The response rate was 70% (2,154 cases). Results: The prevalence of symptoms in the Swedish population was found to accord with results in studies based on different kinds of samples. Women reported significantly more single symptoms, as well as sets of symptoms, than men. There was no clear connection between age and symptoms. The prevalence of sym...

TL;DR: A summary of the knowledge on astroglial-neuronal interaction in glutamate neurotransmission is given in this article, focusing on the contribution of astroglia to synaptic dynamics.
Abstract: This is a summary of the knowledge on astroglial-neuronal interaction in glutamate neurotransmission, especially focusing on astroglial contributions to synaptic dynamics. It briefly addresses different topics such as membrane receptors and signal transduction systems on astroglia and the expression of some ion channels and glutamate carriers.

TL;DR: The results show that the steady-state value of mercury daily dose due to a single amalgam filling is 0.03 ug/day, which is well below the calculated threshold-limiting value (TLV) of 82.29 μg/day considered dangerous for occupational exposure in the United States.
Abstract: The release of mercury vapor from class I amalgam restorations prepared in human molar teeth was studied during chewing simulations in an artificial mouth of a bi-axial servo-hydraulic mechanical test system. So that the total mercury released from the restoration over a fixed time could be determined, a closed chamber surrounded the envelope of chewing motion. In addition, the influence of sampling frequency on mercury release was corrected by the use of different sampling frequencies over a fixed time interval of mercury release measurement and extrapolation to zero sampling time. Thus, a combination of a closed environment and an extrapolation method to determine the mercury release under continuous sampling was used to determine the mercury released under normal breathing conditions. The measured mercury release rate data were used to calculate the potential daily mercury dose in a patient due to a single amalgam restoration, following the method previously outlined by Berglund. The mercury release from both a conventional and a high-copper amalgam was evaluated at different age intervals after the restoration was placed in the teeth. The results show that while the age of the amalgam and the amalgam type influence the extent of mercury release during the initial non-steady-state conditions, the steady-state value of mercury daily dose due to a single amalgam filling is 0.03 micrograms/day, which is well below the calculated threshold-limiting value (TLV) of 82.29 micrograms/day considered dangerous for occupational exposure in the United States.

TL;DR: This study does not provide support for the hypothesis that video display unit work induces any recognized type of facial skin disease.
Abstract: A questionnaire about skin rashes and their symptoms was sent to 3877 randomly selected office employees with different degrees of exposure to video display units (participation rate 96.6%). From this group 809 randomly selected persons were examined and interviewed. Itching and burning sensations with few visible signs were more common among persons who were highly exposed than among those in the nonexposed category. Objective facial signs were not significantly more common among persons in the highly exposed category. No dose-response effect was observed regarding the amount of video display unit exposure and objective skin signs. Unilateral skin rashes and skin malignancies were found in the same frequency in both highly exposed and the nonexposed persons. This study does not provide support for the hypothesis that video display unit work induces any recognized type of facial skin disease.

TL;DR: Higher time-integrated exposure was associated with poorer coding-test performance and more adverse psychiatric symptomatology, found to be independent of participants' beliefs about effects of electromagnetic fields.
Abstract: The validity of several published investigations of the possibility that residential exposures to 50 Hz or 60 Hz electromagnetic fields might cause adverse psychological effects, such as suicide and depression, may have been limited by inadequate controlling for confounders or inadequate measurement of exposures. We investigated the relationships between magnetic field exposure and psychological and mental health variables while controlling for potential confounders and careful characterising individual magnetic field exposures. Five-hundred-and-forty adults living near transmission lines completed neuropsychological tests in major domains of memory and attentional functioning, mental health rating scales and other questionnaires. Magnetic field measurements were taken in each room occupied for at least one hour per day to provide an estimate of total-time-integrated exposure. The data were subjected to joint multivariate multiple regression analysis to test for a linear relation between field exposure and dependent variables, while controlling for effects of possible confounders. Performance on most memory and attention measures was unrelated to exposure, but significant linear dose-response relationships were found between exposure and some psychological and mental health variables. In particular, higher time-integrated exposure was associated with poorer coding-test performance and more adverse psychiatric symptomatology. These associations were found to be independent of participants' beliefs about effects of electromagnetic fields.
