Emerging-Market Born Globals: The Influence of Product-Related Factors on Internationalization Mode in the Indian Apparel Industry

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the influence of product-related factors on the internationalization modes of emerging market born global firms, in terms of their initial and continued international expansion.
Abstract: Motivated by the fact that emerging-market firms are increasingly internationalizing their operations, this study explores the influence of product-related factors on the internationalization modes of emerging market born global firms, in terms of their initial and continued international expansion. Based on data from seven born globals in the Indian apparel industry, we find that these firms continue to be global players using low-commitment internationalization modes in their initial and continued internationalization, and that their product offerings influence their selection of entry modes and their acquisition of foreign customer knowledge. We have identified and bridged a gap in the knowledgebased internationalization process perspective relating to the influence of product-related factors on companies’ acquisition of foreign market knowledge and internationalization processes.

TL;DR: The importance of foresight at the organizational level, as well as the ways to measure it have begun to be studied in the recent literature on strategic management as mentioned in this paper, and some key research questions that emerge are: how does an individual develop foresight and how does it contribute to the organization?
Abstract: The importance of foresight at the organizational level, as well as the ways to measure it have begun to be studied in the recent literature on strategic management. One overarching conclusion that stems from these studies is that organizational foresight is not developed in isolation, but evolves as an aggregation of capabilities (in the sense of the microfoundational literature) throughout the organization. In this context, some key research questions that emerge are: how does an individual develop foresight and how does it contribute to the organization? Studies concerning individual foresight are, however, quite sparse. In this paper, we take up the aforementioned first question of individual foresight development. An exploratory study involving case interviews has been used to find theoretical support for developing an individual foresight measure.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the phenomenon of the born global firm (BGF) in the Indian context and explored firm-level characteristics from the Indian IT industry which act as initiating forces for firms which have made cross-border acquisitions within five years of incorporation.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the phenomenon of the born global firm (BGF) in the Indian context. Specifically, the paper explores firm‐level characteristics (from the Indian IT industry) which act as initiating forces for firms which have made cross‐border acquisitions within five years of incorporation.Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses inductive reasoning to derive a theoretical framework of analysis, using constructs from the resource‐based view and institutional theory.Findings – The paper posits that firm resources, personal and network characteristics of its founders, age of the firm and institutional factors act as the initiating factors for a BGF.Originality/value – This is the first study on the phenomenon of the BGF from India, which is an important emerging market, and has pioneering value, contributing to the growing literature on the topic.

TL;DR: In this article, a list of 16 criteria used by textile and apparel buyers to select overseas vendors was generated based on the literature, in-depth interviews, and content analysis of a major industry publication.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this study is to determine the criteria used by members of the textile and apparel chain to select overseas vendors. Of specific interest is the value (if any) of ISO 9000 registration, i.e. whether Canadian apparel buyers are influenced by such registration, and whether there are determinants of how buyers respond to registration when selecting vendors.Design/methodology/approach – A list of 16 criteria used by textile and apparel buyers to select overseas vendors was generated based on the literature, in‐depth interviews, and content analysis of a major industry publication. The criteria were tested for importance by use of a survey of representatives of the textile‐apparel supply chain in Canada.Findings – Criteria relating to a vendor's flexibility and responsiveness were most important. Registration to a quality program such as ISO 9000 was not considered important nor did it seem to give an overseas vendor a business advantage over its domestic non‐registered counterpart. Tw...

TL;DR: In this article, a study of the competitiveness of Thailand's apparel industry is presented, which reveals the existence of four determinants supporting the Thai apparel industry: basic v. specialized factors; sophisticated and demanding consumer market; the presence of interdependent economic agents; and strategies and structure of Thai companies and domestic rivals.
Abstract: Purpose – Recent liberalization of the world's textile and apparel trade policies and the consequent changes in trade patterns posited threats to smaller textile- and apparel-exporting nations, including Thailand. Thus it is important to understand how the new trade environment affects the competitiveness of Thailand's apparel industry. This study seeks to provide insights into how Thailand's apparel industry has responded to increasingly fierce global competition by drawing on Porter's theory of The Competitive Advantage of Nations. Design/methodology/approach – To assess the competitiveness of the Thai industry, the study triangulated data from various sources, including secondary statistics, media reports, and relevant industry publications. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were also conducted, and participants included key executives from Thailand's apparel industry, government officials, and academics. The interviews were conducted at various locations in three Thai provinces: Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samutsakorn, over a two-week period. Findings – Findings revealed the existence of four determinants supporting the Thai apparel industry: basic v. specialized factors; sophisticated and demanding consumer market; the presence of interdependent economic agents; and strategies and structure of Thai companies and domestic rivals. These four determinants are identical to the “diamonds” outlined in Porter's theory of The Competitive Advantage of Nations and a new source of competitiveness. Furthermore, the Thai government was found to play an important role, by providing support to enhance the global competitiveness of Thai companies. Originality/value – The study is among the first to attempt to provide insights into the competitive national advantage of the Thai apparel industry. Based on the findings, the outlook is positive for the continued success of Thailand's apparel industry in the global arena.

TL;DR: In this article, a qualitative study was conducted to explore how the performance of apparel products is measured in the apparel business so as to contribute theoretical understanding and the company's capacity of apparel product development.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the performance of apparel products is measured in the apparel business so as to contribute theoretical understanding and the company's capacity of apparel product development.Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative research method was employed. Face‐to‐face interviews were conducted with 27 individuals who have developed apparel products in the US apparel and retail industries. Emergent themes were classified into Griffin and Page's “core success and failure measures” including customer acceptance, financial performance, product‐level, and firm‐level.Findings – Findings revealed that the performance measures for apparel products are multidimensional. The combination of consumer acceptance and financial performance measures, especially sales and profitability, served as critical measures for apparel product performance. Both long‐ and short‐term performances were considered.Research limitations/implications – The small, convenience and p...

TL;DR: In this article, the Safe Start Demonstration Project, a national community and systems change effort funded by the US Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, has been evaluated.
Abstract: Cross-case study methodology is a more appropriate and still rigorous methodology for community and systems change research and evaluation. It supports learning about effective implementation, community capacity building, and resident engagementall core elements of community and systems change efforts. It also communicates more effectively to non-researchers and evaluators if, how, and why community and systems change occurred through the use of a narrative that combines qualitative and quantitative data to tell a story. The application of the cross-case study methodology, adapted from Yin's cross-case synthesis approach, requires five essential steps: developing a theory of change, establishing a measurement framework that reflects methodological and data source triangulation, developing a cross-case study protocol and building a database, analysing and interpreting the findings, and communicating the results. This methodology was applied to the evaluation of the Safe Start Demonstration Project, a national community and systems change effort funded by the US Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. This methodology has all the attributes of scientific rigour. In this paper, we argue for a reconsideration of case study research by funders, policymakers, researchers, and evaluators and advance the cross-case methodology as the emerging standard for community and systems change research and evaluation.
