TLDR
The review outlines the concept of epigenetic control of interconnected regulatory pathways steering stress responses and plant development and summarizes recent findings on global alterations in chromatin structure, histone and DNA modifications, and ATP-dependent chromatin remodelling during plant senescence and linked processes.
Abstract
Senescence processes are part of the plant developmental programme. They involve reprogramming of gene expression and are under the control of a complex regulatory network closely linked to other developmental and stressresponsive pathways. Recent evidence indicates that leaf senescence is regulated via epigenetic mechanisms. In the present review, the epigenetic control of plant senescence is discussed in the broader context of environmentsensitive plant development. The review outlines the concept of epigenetic control of interconnected regulatory pathways steering stress responses and plant development. Besides giving an overview of techniques used in the field, it summarizes recent findings on global alterations in chromatin structure, histone and DNA modifications, and ATPdependent chromatin remodelling during plant senescence and linked processes.

Blocking histone deacetylation in Arabidopsis induces pleiotropic effects on plant gene regulation and development. [Erratum: June 19, 2001, v. 98 (13), p. 7647.]

TL;DR: In this article, AtHD1 expression and deacetylation profiles were associated with various developmental abnormalities, including early senescence, ectopic expression of silenced genes, suppression of apical dominance, homeotic changes, heterochronic shift toward juvenility, flower defects, and male and female sterility.

Integration of multi-omics techniques and physiological phenotyping within a holistic phenomics approach to study senescence in model and crop plants.

TL;DR: This review addresses the need for the integration of multi-omics techniques and physiological phenotyping into holistic phenomics approaches to dissect the complex phenomenon of senescence and to elucidate the underlying molecular processes.

Plant organ senescence - regulation by manifold pathways.

TL;DR: A universal nature of senescence is demonstrated, despite this process occurring in organs that have completely different functions, it is very similar; this will provide a powerful tool for plant physiology research.

SWI3 subunits of putative SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling complexes play distinct roles during Arabidopsis development

TL;DR: Data indicate that, by possible contribution to the combinatorial assembly of different SWI/SNF complexes, the ATSWI3 proteins perform nonredundant regulatory functions that affect embryogenesis and both the vegetative and reproductive phases of plant development.
Journal ArticleDOI

Overexpression of a chromatin architecture-controlling AT-hook protein extends leaf longevity and increases the post-harvest storage life of plants.

TL;DR: It is proposed that ectopically expressed ORE7/ESC is negatively regulating leaf senescence and suggested that the resulting chromatin alteration may have a role in controlling leaf longevity.

Expression and function of HD2‐type histone deacetylases in Arabidopsis development

TL;DR: Reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR analysis revealed that a number of genes involved in seed development and maturation were repressed in the 35S::GFP-HD2A plants, supporting a role of HD2A in the regulation of gene expression during seed development.

SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling and linker histones in plants

TL;DR: Recent insights in structural organization and functional diversification of putative plant SWI/SNF-type chromatin remodeling complexes are summarized and significance of recent findings indicating that in both plants and mammals histone H1 is involved in determining patterns of DNA methylation at selected loci is discussed.
