Ethico-religious green supply chain management (GSCM): embedding Islamic ethics’ codes for improving environmental concerns

Abstract: This study aims to propose an Ethico-Religious green supply chain management (GSCM) view grounded in Islamic teachings design to govern human beings working in the industries.,This study adopts a qualitative approach that used the semi-structured-interview method as a research instrument. Three experts researching various aspects of Islam were consulted to identify Islamic teachings related to green supply chain practices.,This study identifies several verses of the Holy Quran and the hadiths (a collection of traditions containing the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) related to GSCM. It proposes these teachings as pro-environmental ethical codes.,The proposed model has not been tested empirically. Future studies can consider an empirical test to find the possible effect of ethical codes on human behavior.,This study contributes to the literature in several ways. First, it presents an Ethico-Religious GSCM view that is new in the literature. Second, it extends the key premise of the natural resource-based view theory for achieving superior competitive advantage. Finally, it proposes a human governance approach useful for achieving firms’ environmental goals. This paper is helpful for managers who will find a human governance model supported by the Ethico-Religious GSCM view.

Abstract: Historically, management theory has ignored the constraints imposed by the biophysical (natural) environment. Building upon resource-based theory, this article attempts to fill this void by proposing a natural-resource-based view of the firm—a theory of competitive advantage based upon the firm's relationship to the natural environment. It is composed of three interconnected strategies: pollution prevention, product stewardship, and sustainable development. Propositions are advanced for each of these strategies regarding key resource requirements and their contributions to sustained competitive advantage.

Abstract: The spontaneous organizational citizenship behavior towards environment (OCBE) of employees in the workplace is crucial to businesses' green development and low-carbon transition. However, it was not considered how such behavior could be encouraged for enhanced firm performance. From the natural resource-based view theory perspective, this study tests a model that investigates how green supply chain management practices, green culture, top management commitment, and OCBE, and influences firm performance. A structural equation model (SEM) was utilized to test the hypotheses using 600 survey questionnaires collected from manufacturing firms. The results show that green supply chain management indirectly affects firm performance through green culture and top management commitment. The results reveal that green culture and top management commitment positively and significantly mediate the relationship between green supply chain management and firm performance. Furthermore, the findings show that OCBE has a direct effect on firm performance. Moreover, the results highlight that OCBE has a positive moderating effect on the association between green supply chain management and firm performance. Finally, the study's findings and implications are disclosed to be useful policy instruments for organizations, administrations, and other stakeholders.

Abstract: ?The stakeholder theory has been advanced and justified in the management literature on the basis of its descriptive accuracy, instrumental power, and normative validity. These three aspects of the theory, although interrelated, are quite distinct; they involve different types of evidence and argument and have different implications. In this article, we examine these three aspects of the theory and critique and integrate important contributions to the literature related to each. We conclude that the three aspects of stakeholder theory are mutually supportive and that the normative base of the theory-which includes the modern theory of property rights-is fundamental. If the unity of the corporate body is real, then there is reality and not simply legal fiction in the proposition that the managers of the unit are fiduciaries for it and not merely for its individual members, that they are . . . trustees for an institution [with multiple constituents] rather than attorneys for the stockholders.

Abstract: The authors conducted a qualitative study of the motivations and contextual factors that induce corporate ecological responsiveness. Analytic induction applied to data collected from 53 firms in the United Kingdom and Japan revealed three motivations: competitiveness, legitimation, and ecological responsibility. These motivations were influenced by three contextual conditions: field cohesion, issue salience, and individual concern. In this article, the authors also identify the conditions that likely lead to high corporate ecological responsiveness.
