Abstract
This chapter describes the establishment and role of European Space Agency (ESA). The ESA is the successor to the European Launcher Development Organization and the European Space Research Organization, which were created under separate conventions concluded in 1962 as European bases for the execution of space activities and programs. ESA was created by the Convention for the Establishment of a European Space Agency, which was opened for signature in Paris on May 30, 1975. The Director General, who is appointed by the council, acts as ESA's chief executive officer and legal representative. He reports annually to the council, attends its meetings, and may make proposals but has no vote. The administrative structure beneath the Director General consists of function oriented Directorates for Administration, Applications Programmes, Spacecraft Operations, Scientific Programmes, and Space Transportation Systems, as well as the Technical Directorate.

The development and evaluation of the Earth Gravitational Model 2008 (EGM2008)

TL;DR: EGM2008 as mentioned in this paper is a spherical harmonic model of the Earth's gravitational potential, developed by a least squares combination of the ITG-GRACE03S gravitational model and its associated error covariance matrix, with the gravitational information obtained from a global set of area-mean free-air gravity anomalies defined on a 5 arc-minute equiangular grid.

Life in Extreme Environments

TL;DR: Critically what it means to be an extremophile is examined, and the implications for evolution, biotechnology and especially the search for life in the Universe are examined.

Diffusion coefficients of some solutes in fcc and liquid Al: critical evaluation and correlation

TL;DR: In this article, the diffusion coefficients of several transition elements (Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and a few non-transition elements (Mg, Si, Ga, and Ge) in fcc and liquid Al are critically reviewed and assessed by means of the least-squares method and semi-empirical correlations.

Aerosol-type-dependent lidar ratios observed with Raman lidar

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented statistics on lidar ratios for almost all climatically relevant aerosol types solely based on Raman lidar measurements, and compared their results to the recently published AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) lidar ratio climatology.

A guide for space lawyers to understanding the NASA Space Shuttle and the ESA Spacelab

G. P. Sloup
TL;DR: In this paper, an investigation concerning the appropriate characterization of the Space Shuttle, taking into account appearance, functions, and purpose, is conducted, concluding that in terms of purely technological criteria, the Shuttle can best be described as an "aerospace vehicle".
