Journal ArticleDOI

Numerical investigation of the effect of the closure law of wicket gates on the transient characteristics of pump-turbine in pump mode

TL;DR: In this paper , two different two-stage broken line closure laws of the wicket gates, modified A scheme (MAS) and modified B scheme (MBS), are presented to investigate the relationship between the Wicket gates closure law and pressure pulsation shutting down pump turbines.
Journal ArticleDOI

Energy performance and flow characteristics of a slanted axial-flow pump under cavitation conditions

TL;DR: In this article , the effect of cavitation on energy performance and flow characteristics of hydraulic machinery was investigated in a slanted axial-flow pump based on entropy production theory and vortex dynamics.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of blade curve shape on the hydraulic performance and pressure pulsation of a pump as turbine

TL;DR: In this article , the authors compared the performance of a forward-curved impeller and a back-cured impeller in terms of the external characteristics, energy loss, and pressure pulsation under the partial load flow rate (0.8 Qr), design condition (1.0 Qr) and overload flow rate(1.2 Qr).
Journal ArticleDOI

Investigation on the hump region generation mechanism of pump mode in low-head pumped hydro storage unit

TL;DR: In this paper , experiments and numerical simulations were carried out on the low-head pumped hydro storage unit in pump mode, and the following results were obtained: the dominant unstable flow structures that induce the formation of the hump region are the leading edge backflow on the blade inlet shroud side and the horn-like vortex on the turbine outlet hub side.

Detached-Eddy Simulation

TL;DR: This review discusses compelling examples, noting the visual and quantitative success of DES and its principal weakness is its response to ambiguous grids, in which the wall-parallel grid spacing is of the order of the boundary-layer thickness.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Review of Water Hammer Theory and Practice

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of both historic developments and present research and practice in the field of hydraulic transients, including mass and momentum equations for one-dimensional flows.
Journal ArticleDOI

Development of DDES and IDDES Formulations for the k-ω Shear Stress Transport Model

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed modifications of two recently developed hybrid CFD strategies, Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) and DDES with Improved wall-modeling capability (IDDES), aimed at fine-tuning of these approaches to the k-ω SST background RANS model.
Journal ArticleDOI

Editorial Policy Statement on the Control of Numerical Accuracy

TL;DR: In this paper, a professional problem exists in the computational fluid dynamics community and also in the broader area of com- putational physics, namely, there is a need for higher stans on the control of numerical accuracy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of transients on Francis turbine runner life: a review

TL;DR: Turbine start–stop cannot be avoided, but runner life may be improved by minimizing the unfavourable pressure loading on the blades during transients through strategic movement of guide vanes.
