Four research projects that use different spatio-temporal visualization techniques to understand the industrial dynamics of post-war film exhibition and distribution in Australia are presented.
Abstract
Cinema data is characteristically complex, heterogeneous and interlinked. Rather than relying on simple information retrieval techniques, researchers are increasingly turning to the creative exploration and reapplication of data in order to more fully explore the meaning of newly available and diverse data sets. In this context, the cinema historian becomes the creator of visual texts which can be assessed for both their interpretive insight and their aesthetic qualities. This paper presents four research projects that use different spatio-temporal visualization techniques to understand the industrial dynamics of post-war film exhibition and distribution in Australia. The research integrates work by a group of inter-disciplinary investigators into the effectiveness of techniques such as dendritic mapping, Circos circular visualizations, animation, cartogram mapping, and multivariate visualization for the study of cinema circuits and operations at a number of scales.

Cinema-going trajectories in the digital age

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted two workshops seeking to understand cinema audiences' digital practices and explore how the contemporary cinema-going experience is shaped in the digital age, concluding that going to the movies constitutes a trajectory during which cinemagoers interact with multiple digital platforms.

Visualising data in digital cinema studies: more than just going through the motions?

TL;DR: The Kinomatics Project as mentioned in this paper examines the critical role visualisation plays for digital cinema studies and proposes that cinema studies has an equally critical role to play in evaluating and developing visualisation methods.

Kinomatics: a global study into cinema data

TL;DR: Using film screening data collected over a two year period, analysis of a global dataset using Appadurai's "-scapes" framework is discussed, identified several of which help to investigate film industry behaviour.

Cinemagoing as spatially contextualised cultural and social practice

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyse the dialectic relations between the notions of space and place and the experience of cinemagoing as a spatialised social practice and a cultural experience; they also investigate the cinema theatre as a physical, symbolic and mental setting.

The Analysis of Spatial Association by Use of Distance Statistics

TL;DR: In this article, a family of statistics, G, is introduced to evaluate the spatial association of a variable within a specified distance of a single point, and a comparison is made between a general G statistic and Moran's I for similar hypothetical and empirical conditions.

Graphs, Maps, Trees: Abstract Models for a Literary History

TL;DR: MoreMoretti as discussed by the authors argues that literature scholars should stop reading books and start counting, graphing, and mapping them instead, and offers charts, maps and time lines, developing the idea of "distant reading" into a full-blown experiment in literary history.

Spatial Data Analysis: An Introduction For Gis Users

TL;DR: The author’s research focused on the development of a modeling system that automates the very labor-intensive and therefore time-heavy and expensive process of manually cataloging and evaluating data points.
