Experimentation investigation of abrasive water jet machining parameters using Taguchi and Evolutionary optimization techniques

TL;DR: Experimental investigation on abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) process for the machining of material AA631-T6 using the Taguchi methodology shows that both the optimization techniques and Taguchi method are the effective tools in optimizing the process parameters of the AWJM process.
Abstract: In the last decade, numerous new materials are rapidly emerging and developed; it creates considerable interest in the researcher to search out the optimum combination of machining parameters during machining of these materials using advanced machining processes (AMP). In this work, an experimental investigation is carried out on abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) process for the machining of material AA631-T6 using the Taguchi methodology. Parameters such as transverse speed, standoff distance and mass flow rate are considered to obtain the influence of these parameters on kerf top width and taper angle . Regression models have been developed to correlate the data generated using experimental results. Seven advanced optimization techniques, i.e., particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm, artificial bee colony, simulated annealing, black hole, biogeography based and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm are attempted for the considered AWJM process. The effectiveness of these algorithms is compared and found that bio-geography algorithm is performing better compared to other algorithms. Furthermore, a non-dominated set of solution is obtained to have diversity in the solutions for the AWJM process. The result obtained using the Taguchi method and optimization techniques are confirmed using confirmation experiments. Confirmatory experiments show that both the optimization techniques and Taguchi method are the effective tools in optimizing the process parameters of the AWJM process.

TL;DR: A multi-objective decision making method named PROMETHEE method is applied in this work in order to select a particular solution out-of the multiple Pareto-optimal solutions provided by MO-Jaya algorithm which best suits the requirements of the process planer.
Abstract: In this work, the process parameters optimization problems of abrasive waterjet machining process are solved using a recently proposed metaheuristic optimization algorithm named as Jaya algorithm and its posteriori version named as multi-objective Jaya (MO-Jaya) algorithm. The results of Jaya and MO-Jaya algorithms are compared with the results obtained by other well-known optimization algorithms such as simulated annealing, particle swam optimization, firefly algorithm, cuckoo search algorithm, blackhole algorithm and bio-geography based optimization. A hypervolume performance metric is used to compare the results of MO-Jaya algorithm with the results of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm and non-dominated sorting teaching–learning-based optimization algorithm. The results of Jaya and MO-Jaya algorithms are found to be better as compared to the other optimization algorithms. In addition, a multi-objective decision making method named PROMETHEE method is applied in this work in order to select a particular solution out-of the multiple Pareto-optimal solutions provided by MO-Jaya algorithm which best suits the requirements of the process planer.

TL;DR: A number of the most commonly-used performance fitness and error metrics for regression and classification algorithms, with emphasis on engineering applications, are examined.
Abstract: Machine learning (ML) is the field of training machines to achieve high level of cognition and perform human-like analysis. Since ML is a data-driven approach, it seemingly fits into our daily lives and operations as well as complex and interdisciplinary fields. With the rise of commercial, open-source and user-catered ML tools, a key question often arises whenever ML is applied to explore a phenomenon or a scenario: what constitutes a good ML model? Keeping in mind that a proper answer to this question depends on a variety of factors, this work presumes that a good ML model is one that optimally performs and best describes the phenomenon on hand. From this perspective, identifying proper assessment metrics to evaluate performance of ML models is not only necessary but is also warranted. As such, this paper examines a number of the most commonly-used performance fitness and error metrics for regression and classification algorithms, with emphasis on engineering applications.

TL;DR: There is a deep and useful connection between statistical mechanics and multivariate or combinatorial optimization (finding the minimum of a given function depending on many parameters), and a detailed analogy with annealing in solids provides a framework for optimization of very large and complex systems.
Abstract: There is a deep and useful connection between statistical mechanics (the behavior of systems with many degrees of freedom in thermal equilibrium at a finite temperature) and multivariate or combinatorial optimization (finding the minimum of a given function depending on many parameters). A detailed analogy with annealing in solids provides a framework for optimization of the properties of very large and complex systems. This connection to statistical mechanics exposes new information and provides an unfamiliar perspective on traditional optimization problems and methods.

TL;DR: This paper suggests a non-dominated sorting-based MOEA, called NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II), which alleviates all of the above three difficulties, and modify the definition of dominance in order to solve constrained multi-objective problems efficiently.
Abstract: Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) that use non-dominated sorting and sharing have been criticized mainly for: (1) their O(MN/sup 3/) computational complexity (where M is the number of objectives and N is the population size); (2) their non-elitism approach; and (3) the need to specify a sharing parameter. In this paper, we suggest a non-dominated sorting-based MOEA, called NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II), which alleviates all of the above three difficulties. Specifically, a fast non-dominated sorting approach with O(MN/sup 2/) computational complexity is presented. Also, a selection operator is presented that creates a mating pool by combining the parent and offspring populations and selecting the best N solutions (with respect to fitness and spread). Simulation results on difficult test problems show that NSGA-II is able, for most problems, to find a much better spread of solutions and better convergence near the true Pareto-optimal front compared to the Pareto-archived evolution strategy and the strength-Pareto evolutionary algorithm - two other elitist MOEAs that pay special attention to creating a diverse Pareto-optimal front. Moreover, we modify the definition of dominance in order to solve constrained multi-objective problems efficiently. Simulation results of the constrained NSGA-II on a number of test problems, including a five-objective, seven-constraint nonlinear problem, are compared with another constrained multi-objective optimizer, and the much better performance of NSGA-II is observed.

TL;DR: This paper discusses natural biogeography and its mathematics, and then discusses how it can be used to solve optimization problems, and sees that BBO has features in common with other biology-based optimization methods, such as GAs and particle swarm optimization (PSO).
Abstract: Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of biological organisms. Mathematical equations that govern the distribution of organisms were first discovered and developed during the 1960s. The mindset of the engineer is that we can learn from nature. This motivates the application of biogeography to optimization problems. Just as the mathematics of biological genetics inspired the development of genetic algorithms (GAs), and the mathematics of biological neurons inspired the development of artificial neural networks, this paper considers the mathematics of biogeography as the basis for the development of a new field: biogeography-based optimization (BBO). We discuss natural biogeography and its mathematics, and then discuss how it can be used to solve optimization problems. We see that BBO has features in common with other biology-based optimization methods, such as GAs and particle swarm optimization (PSO). This makes BBO applicable to many of the same types of problems that GAs and PSO are used for, namely, high-dimension problems with multiple local optima. However, BBO also has some features that are unique among biology-based optimization methods. We demonstrate the performance of BBO on a set of 14 standard benchmarks and compare it with seven other biology-based optimization algorithms. We also demonstrate BBO on a real-world sensor selection problem for aircraft engine health estimation.
