TLDR
The results show that farm size and diversity of agricultural production vary substantially across regions and are key structural determinants of food and nutrient production that need to be considered in plans to meet social, economic, and environmental targets.About:

How much of the world's food do smallholders produce?
TL;DR: This article examined variations in crop production by farm size using a newly-compiled global sample of subnational level microdata and agricultural censuses covering more countries and crop types than assessed to date, and estimated that farms under 2ha globally produce 28% of total crop production and 30% of food supply on 24% of gross agricultural area.

The conditions of agricultural growth
TL;DR: In this paper, Boserup argues that changes and improvements occur from within agricultural communities, and that improvements are governed not simply by external interference, but by those communities themselves using extensive analyses of the costs and productivity of the main systems of traditional agriculture.
