TL;DR: Graphene-coated Fe nanocomposites are synthesized for the first time and show distinct dielectric properties, which result in excellent microwave absorption performance in a wide frequency range and provides a novel approach for exploring high-performance microwave absorption material.
Abstract: Graphene has evoked extensive interests for its abundant physical properties and potential applications. It is reported that the interfacial electronic interaction between metal and graphene would give rise to charge transfer and change the electronic properties of graphene, leading to some novel electrical and magnetic properties in metal-graphene heterostructure. In addition, large specific surface area, low density and high chemical stability make graphene act as an ideal coating material. Taking full advantage of the aforementioned features of graphene, we synthesized graphene-coated Fe nanocomposites for the first time and investigated their microwave absorption properties. Due to the charge transfer at Fe-graphene interface in Fe/G, the nanocomposites show distinct dielectric properties, which result in excellent microwave absorption performance in a wide frequency range. This work provides a novel approach for exploring high-performance microwave absorption material as well as expands the application field of graphene-based materials.

TL;DR: In this paper, the main mechanisms on strengthening and toughening, cracking self-healing, friction self-lubrication, and electromagnetic shielding and absorption of SiC matrix composites are discussed.
Abstract: In the last two decades, fibre-reinforced SiC ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) have attracted extensive interests. Owing to the designable multi-scale microstructure feature and the tailorable processing methods such as chemical vapour infiltration and polymer derived ceramics, SiC matrix composites attain great potential as multifunctional composites. Through designing the fibre, interphase, matrix and coating, the composite exhibits a multitude of functionalities which are desirable for various technological applications. Besides strengthening and toughening design of CMCs, three inspiring issues of multifunctional CMCs are receiving increasing attention, including crack self-healing, friction self-lubrication, and electromagnetic shielding and absorption, which are the key mechanisms to promote the application of CMCs in hot structures of engines and aerospace vehicles, braking pads/discs, various electronic devices, etc. The present review covers the main mechanisms on strengthening and toughening, cr...

Abstract: We report the preparation of nanocomposites of reduced graphene oxide with embedded Fe3O4/Fe nanorings (FeNR@rGO) by chemical hydrothermal growth. We illustrate the use of these nanocomposites as novel electromagnetic wave absorbing materials. The electromagnetic wave absorption properties of the nanocomposites with different compositions were investigated. The preparation procedure and nanocomposite composition were optimized to achieve the best electromagnetic wave absorption properties. Nanocomposites with a GO:α-Fe2O3 mass ratio of 1:1 prepared by annealing in H2/Ar for 3 h exhibited the best properties. This nanocomposite sample (thickness = 4.0 mm) showed a minimum reflectivity of–23.09 dB at 9.16 GHz. The band range was 7.4–11.3 GHz when the reflectivity was less than–10 dB and the spectrum width was up to 3.9 GHz. These figures of merit are typically of the same order of magnitude when compared to the values shown by traditional ferric oxide materials. However, FeNR@rGO can be readily applied as a microwave absorbing material because the production method we propose is highly compatible with mass production standards.

TL;DR: The excellent absorbing performance together with wider EAB endows the composite nanofibers potential to be used as reinforcements in polymers and ceramics (SiC, Si3N4, SiO2, Al2O3, etc).
Abstract: SiC/Si3N4 composite nanofibers with in situ embedded graphite, which show highly efficient electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption performance in gigahertz frequency, were prepared by electrospinning with subsequent polymer pyrolysis and annealing. By means of incorporating graphite and Si3N4 into SiC, the EM wave absorption properties of the nanofibers were improved. The relationship among processing, fiber microstructure, and their superior EM wave absorption performance was systematically investigated. The EM wave absorption capability and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of nanofibers can be simply controlled by adjusting annealing atmosphere and temperature. The nanofibers after annealing at 1300 °C in Ar present a minimum reflection loss (RL) of −57.8 dB at 14.6 with 5.5 GHz EAB. The nanofibers annealed in N2 at 1300 °C exhibit a minimum RL value of −32.3 dB at a thickness of 2.5 mm, and the EAB reaches 6.4 GHz over the range of 11.3–17.7 GHz. The highly efficient EM wave absorption performance of ...

TL;DR: The authors' simulations show that a version of the lens operating at the frequency of visible light can be realized in the form of a thin slab of silver, which resolves objects only a few nanometers across.
Abstract: Optical lenses have for centuries been one of scientists’ prime tools. Their operation is well understood on the basis of classical optics: curved surfaces focus light by virtue of the refractive index contrast. Equally their limitations are dictated by wave optics: no lens can focus light onto an area smaller than a square wavelength. What is there new to say other than to polish the lens more perfectly and to invent slightly better dielectrics? In this Letter I want to challenge the traditional limitation on lens performance and propose a class of “superlenses,” and to suggest a practical scheme for implementing such a lens. Let us look more closely at the reasons for limitation in performance. Consider an infinitesimal dipole of frequency v in front of a lens. The electric component of the field will be given by some 2D Fourier expansion,
