Abstract
Indentation tests are useful in evaluating the response of materials. They can be applied to determine the mechanical properties of bulk materials, thin films and coatings. Control of some factors that affect the test and the resulting property evaluation is important. Finite element model based elastoplastic contact analysis of a spherical indenter on a flat half space has revealed some interesting behaviours, which highlight certain limitations associated with the response. Under elastoplastic behaviour, it is observed that the constraint factor value sometimes defies the limit set for the validity of the analysis, and the variation is sensitive to yield strength, with a decreasing effect on the critical depth of deformation. Failure to acknowledge such effects will lead to erroneous evaluation of the response. The present work highlights the observations of the numerical simulation results and some experimental data on static indentation response evaluation of metallic and sprayed ceramic composite coa...

Evaluation of tensile properties of austenitic stainless steel 316L with linear hardening by modified indentation method

TL;DR: In this paper, a modified indentation algorithm was used to determine the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steel 316L by taking into account its linear hardening characteristic, and the effect of solution treatment temperature on tensile property of stainless steel was investigated by the instrumented indentation test using the modified algorithm.

An improved technique for determining hardness and elastic modulus using load and displacement sensing indentation experiments

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a Berkovich indenter to determine hardness and elastic modulus from indentation load-displacement data, and showed that the curve of the curve is not linear, even in the initial stages of the unloading process.

A Finite Element Study of Elasto-Plastic Hemispherical Contact Against a Rigid Flat

TL;DR: In this paper, a finite element study of elasto-plastic hemispherical contact is presented, and the results are normalized such that they are valid for macro contacts (e.g., rolling element bearings), although micro-scale surface characteristics such as grain boundaries are not considered.
