Flexible Wall Permeameter to Measure the Hydraulic Conductivity of Soils in Horizontal Direction

28 Mar 2013-Geotechnical Testing Journal (ASTM International)-Vol. 36, Iss: 3, pp 20120039
TL;DR: In this paper, a flexible wall permeability apparatus was modified for direct measurement of the hydraulic conductivity of soils in the horizontal direction, and constant head permeability tests were carried out using the radial flow flexiblewall permeameter on soil samples with a central sand drain to allow the water to flow radially from the center sand drain towards a peripheral drain.
Abstract: The flexible wall permeability apparatus was modified for the direct measurement of the hydraulic conductivity of soils in the horizontal direction. Constant head permeability tests were carried out using the radial flow flexible wall permeameter on soil samples with central sand drain to allow the water to flow radially from the central sand drain towards a peripheral drain. Tests were also conducted using the conventional flexible wall permeameter on samples that were trimmed horizontally, so as to measure the hydraulic conductivity in the horizontal directions for comparison. The test results obtained from the proposed setup agrees well with those obtained from the samples that were trimmed horizontally, proving the validity of the results obtained from the proposed apparatus.

TL;DR: In this article, a consolidation cell is described in which the total stress is applied by means of hydraulic pressure acting across a convoluted rubber jack, allowing the separation of the instant of loading from the commencement of drainage and permitting the measurement of initial pore pressures.
Abstract: Synopsis A consolidation cell is described in which the total stress is applied by means of hydraulic pressure acting across a convoluted rubber jack. This arrangement improves control of the drainage conditions, allowing the separation of the instant of loading from the commencement of drainage and permitting the measurement of initial pore pressures. Back pressures are readily applied. A range of cell sizes meet the need to test larger samples of non-uniform deposits. The cell allows both vertical and radial flom tests for consolidation or direct permeability measurements.

TL;DR: In this article, the hydraulic conductivity of the estuarine clay at Bothkennar, Scotland, was investigated using pushed-in-place piezometers, self-boring permeameters and the BAT system.
Abstract: In characterizing the estuarine clay at Bothkennar, Scotland, the hydraulic conductivity (permeability) was studied. In situ the hydraulic conductivity was determined using pushed-in-place piezometers, self-boring permeameters and the BAT system; in the laboratory oedometer cells, triaxial cells and a radial flow cell were used to determine the vertical and horizontal hydraulic conductivities and their variation with vertical compression. The results show a size effect and an anisotropy ratio varying with the fabric of the soil, but typically between 1·5 and 2. They also indicate that the pushed-in-place piezometers and the BAT system underestimate the hydraulic conductivity. The most representative profile seems to be given by the self-boring permeameter. The variation with compression of the hydraulic conductivity can be characterized by Ck=0·5 e0. Pour caracteriser l'argile d'estuaire a Bothkennar, Ecosse, la conductivite hydraulique (permeabilite) a ete etudiee. In situ la conductivite hydraulique a e...

TL;DR: In this article, the vertical and horizontal permeability of samples of Bothkennar clay have been made in controlled flow tests and values have been estimated from interpretation of consolidation tests, which can be linked with different clay facies that have been identified in parallel engineering geological studies.
Abstract: Laboratory measurements of the vertical and horizontal permeability of samples of Bothkennar clay have been made in controlled flow tests and values have been estimated from interpretation of consolidation tests. The permeability anisotropy that has been observed can be linked with different clay facies that have been identified in parallel engineering geological studies.
