Abstract: Understanding the response of pile foundations to seismic loads is a necessary prerequisite to properly analyze and/or design them. This objective presents the civil engineering student and teacher with a complex problem, which typically challenges and strains the traditional didactic educational approach. In teaching the topic, we had faced significant difficulties in meeting the challenge of leaving the students with a thorough appreciation and understanding of the material. This was reflected in course evaluation results and comments. As such, an attempt was initiated to improve and enhance the learning/teaching process by incorporating a spreadsheetbased set of analysis/design tools with associated graphical representations. The approach described herein proved to be an effective and accessible method, according to the feedback solicited from students. In this paper, the basic background and available methods for the design of laterally loaded piles are presented along with the developed spreadsheet tool. Two design methods were included; one is a commonly used solution for laterally loaded piles; the other is a hybrid method which we compiled during the course of our work. The programming techniques and the methodologies adopted are also included. The Excel spreadsheets which were developed are presented along with illustrative examples.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used finite element analysis of pile cap resistance under lateral load and showed that the lateral carrying capacity of single pile and pile groups increases as the pile cap depth below the ground surface increases and as the spacing between piles in the group increases.
Abstract: Analytical studies using finite element analysis of pile cap resistance under lateral load is seldom reported in literature. Recently, presents the results of experimental study on model piles to show the effect of pile cap elevation below the ground surface and pile spacing on lateral resistance of single pile and pile groups driven in sand. From their parametric study, they concluded that the lateral carrying capacity of single pile and pile groups increase as the pile cap depth below the ground surface increases and as the spacing between piles in the group increases. The objective of this study is to study pile–soil–cap interaction under lateral load considering different influences parameter and thus quantifying the lateral resistance for different conditions. Finite element modeling and analysis is performed for three different spacings, namely 3D, 5D, and 9D for RCC pile with 300, 400, and 500 mm diameter. It is observed that pile cap has lateral resistance varying from 35·42 to 44·06% impl...

TL;DR: In this paper, beam on nonlinear winkler foundation (BNWF) modeling is employed for the purpose of modeling spudcan performance, where the load-displacement behavior of the foundation is required to be included in any numerical model of the structure.
Abstract: As jack-up platforms have recently been used in deeper and harsher waters, there has been an increasing demand to understand their behaviour more accurately to develop more sophisticated analysis techniques. One of the areas of significant development has been the modelling of spudcan performance, where the load-displacement behaviour of the foundation is required to be included in any numerical model of the structure. In this study, beam on nonlinear winkler foundation (BNWF) modeling—which is based on using nonlinear springs and dampers instead of a continuum soil media—is employed for this purpose. A regular monochrome design wave and an irregular wave representing a design sea state are applied to the platform as lateral loading. By using the BNWF model and assuming a granular soil under spudcans, properties such as soil nonlinear behaviour near the structure, contact phenomena at the interface of soil and spudcan (such as uplifting and rocking), and geometrical nonlinear behaviour of the structure are studied. Results of this study show that inelastic behaviour of the soil causes an increase in the lateral displacement at the hull elevation and permanent unequal settlement in soil below the spudcans, which are increased by decreasing the friction angle of the sandy soil. In fact, spudcans and the underlying soil cause a relative fixity at the platform support, which changes the dynamic response of the structure compared with the case where the structure is assumed to have a fixed support or pinned support. For simulating this behaviour without explicit modelling of soil-structure interaction (SSI), moment-rotation curves at the end of platform legs, which are dependent on foundation dimensions and soil characteristics, are obtained. These curves can be used in a simplified model of the platform for considering the relative fixity at the soil-foundation interface.

Abstract: Heyelanlar dogal afet sayilarinin afet turlerine gore dagilimi dikkate alindiginda %45 ile en sik karsilasilan doga olaylaridir. Heyelan cozum projelerinin yapilabilmesi icin heyelan sirasinda kayma duzleminde olusan reziduel kayma dayanimi parametrelerinin gercege en yakin sekilde tahmin edilmesi gerekir.

TL;DR: In this article, a database for Baghdad soils is made using different GIS techniques connecting the spatial locations of those soils with their properties (Atterberg limits, specific gravity, grain size analysis, Shear Strength parameters, Consolidation parameters), Borehole log, Site profile using the attribute tables, hyperlinks, metadata and SQL (System Query Language), so GIS technique give the facilities for adding, editing and analyzing the existing data as well as the any future data of Baghdad soils.
Abstract: In this paper, assessing underground conditions and the engineering properties of the various strata of fourteen sites Baghdad are made. The sites are divided into two groups, one in Karkh and the other in Rusafa. Assessing the underground conditions can be occurred by drilling vertical holes called exploratory boring into the ground, obtaining soil (disturbed and undisturbed) samples, and testing these samples in a laboratory (civil engineering laboratory /University of Baghdad). From disturbed, the tests involved the grain size analysis and then classified the soil, Atterberg limit, chemical test (organic content, sulphate content, gypsum content and chloride content). From undisturbed samples, the test involved the consolidation test (from this test, the following parameters can be obtained: initial void ratio eo, compression index cc, swelling index cs , coefficient of consolidation cv , coefficient of volume change mv, maximum preconsolidation stress ,Effective overburden pressure ( and shear test (the following parameters can be obtained: undrained cohesion cu, angle of friction φ.In-situ testing was carried out by the standard penetration test in order to obtain the penetration resistance of the soil strata in a bore hole. Database for Baghdad soils is made using different GIS techniques connecting the spatial locations of those soils with their properties (Atterberg Limits, Specific Gravity, Grain size Analysis, Shear Strength parameters, Consolidation parameters), Borehole log, Site profile using the attribute tables, hyperlinks, metadata and SQL (System Query Language), so GIS techniques give the facilities for adding, editing and analyzing the existing data as well as the any future data of Baghdad soils.
