TL;DR: The Windsor Bridge provides a two-lane highway crossing of the Susquehanna River in Broome County, New York as mentioned in this paper, which was built in 1935 and required rehabilitation in the early 1980s.
Abstract: The Windsor Bridge provides a two-lane highway crossing of the Susquehanna River in Broome County, New York. The structure comprises three 62.5-m (205-ft) simple-span through trusses supported by reinforced concrete abutments and solid-shaft piers. Having been built in 1935, it required rehabilitation in the early 1980s. The major effort included a deck replacement and complete structure repainting. What was expected to be relatively minor surface restoration of the foundation units became much more involved and complex. A coring program was initiated for predictions of the volume to be restored. The cores were petrographically examined and found to exhibit evidence of freeze-thaw damage and alkali-silica reactivity of the aggregate. The shafts, which were 2.13-m (7 ft) thick, were found to be delaminated from the freeze-thaw damage to depths of up to 610 mm (24 in.). An intensive evaluation of alternatives concluded that the most appropriate solution for this situation was to encapsulate the pier shaft w...

TL;DR: In this paper, a genetic algorithm approach is used for predicting the settlement of shallow foundations on granular soils, which can be used to fit a function to set of experimental data with a high degree of accuracy.
Abstract: In this paper, a genetic algorithm approach is used for predicting the settlement of shallow foundations on granular soils. The development and verification of the genetic model was done using a large database containing about 198 case histories from various published literatures. The results of the model obtained were compared with various empirical equations available for measuring settlement. The correlation of predicted datas with actual field measurements was determined and it was found out that the genetic algorithm approach can be used to fit a function to set of experimental data with a high degree of accuracy. The equation for settlement thus obtained connecting settlement and its contributing factors can be used in predicting settlements for new cases that were not used for the development of the genetic model.

TL;DR: In this paper, an independent study on the effects of variations in dynamic parameters and resistance at different stages of driving and suitability of choices of different pile make-up and hammers for an optimum design is presented.
Abstract: The types of subsoil dealt with in the Gulf of Thailand and surrounding region are conducive to the installation of driven piles. Among the various aspects of driven pile design, pile driveability analysis plays a major role in the selection of the feasible hammer and determining pile make-up to suit, besides defining acceptance criteria to ensure a certain level of confidence of its fitness for purpose. The accuracy of a driveability study particularly depends on the selection of its parameters to best represent the in-situ scenario. The most uncertain of the parameters are those related to the soil model. It has been observed in recent projects in the Gulf of Thailand, that the consideration of suitable soil resistance to driving, coupled with soil dynamic parameters, significantly affects driving sequence planning, design, material, hammer selection and above all pile acceptance criteria. This is particularly true for a region that contains predominantly clayey subsoil resulting in large diameter, long friction piles susceptible to driving disturbances and slow strength recovery. Different researchers suggested suitable dynamic parameters and soil resistance during driving calibrated to specific regions. Our regional experience suggests a set of soil degradation and parameters to suit the different stages of driving which is corroborated by pile monitoring records in one of the sites during continuous and delayed driving scenarios. The most sensitive of all dynamic soil parameters is the skin damping in clay. While Smith’s wave theory approach considers a conservative assumption in selecting the parameters in absence of site-specific data, a different approach may be adopted based on consistency of the clay for a site where the geotechnical parameters are well defined. This paper includes an independent study on the effects of variations in dynamic parameters and resistance at different stages of driving and suitability of choices of different pile make-up and hammers for an optimum design. Earlier experiences, simulation studies and back-analyses of available driving records are undertaken in order to reach a reasonable judgment for the region.

TL;DR: In this article, a structural model with raft footing has been used as a base isolation media and experiments and analytical work has been performed on the model with a raft footing and found encouraging results.
Abstract: Generally seismic isolation is achieved by supporting the structure on laminated rubber bearings, friction pendulum bearings, roller bearings etc. Very little work has been performed using soil as a base isolation media. Experiments and analytical work has been performed on a structural model with raft footing and found encouraging results. Details of this work are presented in this paper.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Schmertmann method was used to calculate the allowable bearing capacity and elastic settlement values of the soils of the city of Bartin in Northwest Turkey on the Black Sea and the results showed that calculated settlement values are very high and can damage the foundation systems of any building constructed in future.
Abstract: In this study, since the city of Bartin in Northwest Turkey on the Black Sea is in the first-degree seismic zone and its residential area only occupies 7% of the total acreage that is expected to expand with newly flourishing urbanization, soil samples were obtained from a total of five different locations where there are open areas for the construction of dwellings. Engineering properties of the soils were assessed by laboratory experiments and the allowable bearing capacity and elastic settlement (Schmertmann method) values of the soils were calculated. The results showed that calculated settlement values are very high and can damage the foundation systems of any building constructed in future; therefore, allowable settlement value was fixed at 50 mm and allowable bearing capacities of the soils were obtained from back calculations by using the Schmertmann method. The aim of calculating allowable bearing capacity modified by settlement analysis is to propose a procedure about the foundation designs of the building laying on compressible sandy soils. Key words: Shallow foundations, allowable bearing capacity, silty sand, Schmertmann method, settlement.
