Large number of earthquakes have epicenters in offshore areas and their effects are a matter of great concern This paper applies, for two dimensional problems, the Indirect Boundary Element Method to calculate the seismic pressure profile with the water depth due to the incidence of P- and SV-waves on the seabed, which can be characterized using the soil properties Moreover, seismic amplifications of the seabed are highlighted Our formulation can be considered as a numerical implementation of the Huygens’ Principle in which the diffracted waves are constructed at the boundary from which they are radiated Thus mathematically, it is fully equivalent to the classical Somigliana’s representation theorem Numerical results show the importance of knowing the properties of the marine soil because the pressure profile has an enormous dependence with respect to them In some cases, pressure amplifications of six times between extreme values of soil materials can be expected In addition, results from a layered numerical model evince that large seismic amplifications may be found, they can reach values up to 1557 and 1836 times the incident P- and SV-waves, respectively

Effects of the soil properties on the sea pressure profile due to seismic motions

Underground structures are divided into fully buried structure and partially buried structures which can be any structure of diverse shapes such as, shelters, basement structures, underground mall facilities, underground parking spaces, silos, storage facilities, retention basins, shafts, tunnels, pipes, underground railway, metro stations, to mention a few. Underground tunnels are one of the most frequent modes for modern transportation. These tunnels are subjected for varying loading conditions from static to quasi-static and dynamic loading. These loading conditions are differentiated on the basis of strain rate which varies from 10−9 to 104/sec. It is very important to determine static and dynamic response of lining under different loads for better performance and safety of tunnel. The response of tunnel can be determined numerically and then compared with experimental results. Crack patterns and deformation at tunnel crown are determined for surface static and dynamic load. Crack zone under loading condition is related to the material strength of the surrounding rock mass. An attempt has made in the study to analyze the response of lining under static and impact loading through experimentation.

Influence of Foundation Stiffness on Reinforced Soil Wall

Consolidation analysis using a finite element formulation based on Biot's consolidation theory has been used to study the time-dependent behaviour of a frame structure resting on a soft clay layer. The effect of soil consolidation on the entire interactive behaviour of a frame-soil mass system is considered. Time history of axial forces and bending moments of the structural elements (beams and columns) are compared with those of time-independent analysis. It is shown that, in some elements, the maximum forces in the frame occur during consolidation and that checking the final forces in the frame by time-independent conventional frame analysis may not be sufficient.
