Abstract: The solution of sheet pile wall problem in geotechnical engineering is almost as old as the sheet pile wall itself. The established method for determining magnitude of embedment depth is well accepted and almost precise. However several approximate methods and charts have been developed over years to simplify the life of practicing engineers in designing sheet pile wall. Those methods use incoherent methods of analysis, complex parameters and graphs difficult for interpolation. Here author has made an attempt to revisit the problem and simplify the determination of embedment depth of sheet pile wall.

Abstract: Area development deals with optimal land use and the reduction of the risk of geological disasters. The coastal area of South Bali is prone to land settlement hazards. In order to mitigate the risk, it is important to understand the depositional environment of the area related to its bearing capacity and geological hazard risks. The aim of this research is to understand the subsurface depositional environment and quantifying its bearing capacity. Quantitative modeling was carried out to obtain the sediment-bearing capacity of the Pendungan area in Bali, Indonesia. The methods used in this research were the observation of borehole cores, the identification of the cone penetration test (CPTu) curves pattern, the sediment index property test, the soil strength laboratory, and bearing capacity analysis. Based on lithologic association, the CPTu curve pattern, and grain size analysis, there are three facies developing in the study area with different bearing capacity values. Generally, beach ridge sand has a higher bearing capacity (N-SPT value of 8 – 52) for shallow foundation than fluvial clay. Meanwhile, floodplain facies has the lowest bearing capacity (N-SPT value of 2 – 20).

Abstract: Under the road development programme of Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) in Ethiopia, many roads spreading all over the country were upgraded from the existing gravel road to the widened asphalt road. Due to the rugged and mountainous terrain condition, natural and man-made slope failures such as landslides usually occur in almost all the hilly and mountainous terrain in Ethiopia. The main cause for the occurrences of failures at different locations along project roads which were widened either by cutting the hill slope and/or filling the valley slope was high rainfall in the area during the month of June to September. In this paper, the case study on the investigations of landslide failures along hill slope, valley slope, slope of bridge approaches, slope of hillside on upstream and valley side on downstream of culverts along project roads is described. The analysis of landslides and its different methods of mitigation measures, namely flattening of slope with or without provision of intermediate berms, provision of lateral support by gravity retaining wall at toe of hill slope or at road edge on valley slope side including proper slope protection and drainage measures adopted in the rehabilitation works along different project roads in Ethiopia, are presented here.
