The aim of this paper is to describe the evaluation method used for qualification of the site under study. The site is located in Abu Sid Block 14 at Khartoum State. In situ and Laboratory testing were carried out to make the data available for the evaluation. Based on geotechnical investigation, the top clay soil is potentially expansive and problems are expected to occur due to the soil heave associated with increase in its moisture content, if certain measures are not taken during construction stage. Such measures and precautions have to be considered to avoid excessive movements especially under lightly loaded buildings, floors and underground structures. Many recommendations were derived to make optimum use of the site as residential area.

Pembangunan struktur  gedung, pertama kali dikerjakan adalah pekerjaan fondasi.  Dalam merencanakan suatu fondasi untuk semua bangunan harus memperhatikan daya dukung dan biaya yang ekonomis. Proyek pembangunan pengembangan gedung kuliah Universitas Widyagama Malang memilki dua Fondasi yang berbeda yakni fondasi menerus pada bangunan lama dan fondasi Strauss pada lantai empat dan lima. Pada bangunan eksisting yang lama fondasi lajur tidak dapat diganggu dan untuk bangunan lantai empat dan lima direncanakan menggunakan fondasi Strauss. Dalam studi ini akan di analisis penggantian fondasi menerus pada bangunan lama dengan fondasi Strauss pada bangunan baru. Dari hasil perhitungan didapat daya dukung fondasi dengan menggunakan 4 tiang adalah sebesar 761.98 kN, Fondasi dengan menggunakan 6 tiang adalah sebesar 863.60 kN, Fondasi dengan menggunakan 8 tiang adalah sebesar 678.97 kN dan Fondasi yang menggunakan 12 tiang adalah sebesar 1035.061kN. Untuk Biaya fondasi Strauss yang dibutuhkan dalam Proyek Pembangunan Pengembangan Gedung Kampus II Universitas Widyagama Malang adalah sebesar Rp.3,833,300,000.00

Navigation lock structure analysis by finite element method

Building footings are usually susceptible to soil settlement and swelling, uniform or differential. The settlement and swelling causes higher stresses in building elements. The settlement and upheave are classified as main reason for structure failure and serious instability problems. This research investigated the effect of strap beams on improving structural resistance to settlement and upheaves using numerical methods of analysis. Two cases of problems were  considered. Case 1 is a R/C building subjected to differential settlement due to excavation for part of the building to construct a basement. Case2 is R/C building subjected to differential upheave due to increase in the moisture content of the expansive soil. For both cases severe structural cracks and displacement of foundations had taken place. SAFE program was used to predict the settlement and upheave of the foundations for the two cases concentrating on the results of the displacements while moments and the shear forces can be obtained. ABAQUS program for finite element was used to calculate the displacement of foundations and stress introduced in the soil in case1. A strap beam is used to solve the problem for the two cases. The sections of the strap beam used were concrete strap beam and cased beam for case1 and case2, respectively. The results indicate that strap beam can reduce the differential settlement and differential  upheave greatly.
