A methodology for the preliminary assessment of existing railway bridges for high-speed traffic

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed a method that can be used at an early stage to estimate the expected cost of upgrading a bridge network and found that 70% of the plate/beam bridges, 64% of closed slab-frame bridges, and 41% of open slabframe bridges are expected to not fulfill the requirement on the maximum bridge deck acceleration for ballasted tracks.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of stress level on the bearing capacity factor, Nγ, by the ZEL method

TL;DR: In this article, the authors employed the zero extension lines (ZEL) method, which has wide applications in determination of bearing capacity and load-displacement behavior of foundations and retaining walls, to predict the actual bearing capacity of foundations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Landslides triggered by excavation in the loess plateau of China: A case study of Middle Pleistocene loess slopes

TL;DR: In this article, the deformation features and failure mechanism of a homogeneous loess slope and a double paleosol-interlayer loess slopes under different excavation slope angles were analyzed and compared.
Journal ArticleDOI

Seismic Coupling of Short-Period Wind Noise Through Mars’ Regolith for NASA’s InSight Lander

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a 1:1-scale model of the seismometer and WTS, combined with field testing at two analogue sites in Iceland, to determine the transfer coefficient between the two tripods and quantify the proportion of WTS vibration noise transmitted through the regolith to the seismometers.

Hydraulic Fill Manual : For Dredging and Reclamation Works

TL;DR: In this paper, a thoroughly researched book, written by noted experts, takes the reader step-by-step through the complex development of a hydraulic fi ll project, showing that without proper hydraulic equipment and suitable specialised equipment, many major infrastructure projects such as ports, airports, roads, industrial or housing projects could not be realized.
