Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

Analysis and Compensation of Phase Noise in Vector OFDM Systems

TL;DR: It is shown that compared with OFDM, V-OFDM systems can perform phase noise estimation with lower complexity and the decorrelation and cancellation techniques are used to compensate for the phase noise impairment.

Frequency domain channel estimation for MIMO SC-FDMA systems with CDM pilots

TL;DR: A robust iterative channel estimation (RITCE) with a frequency replacement (FR) algorithm is designed and a low-complexity adaptation method is proposed for practical MIMO SC-FDMA systems, wherein FR is performed according to the reliability of the data estimates.

A Wavelet Packet Modulation Method for Satellite Communications

TL;DR: The single carrier WPM (SC-WPM) method is proposed that applies the principle of SC-OFDM to WPM to remedy the PAPR, and it is shown that the performance of WPM is better than OFDM.

Subspace beamforming for near-capacity MIMO performance

TL;DR: In this paper, a subspace beamforming method is presented that decomposes a MIMO channel into multiple pairs of subchannels, and the pairing is done based on singular values such that similar channel capacity is obtained between different subchannel pairs.

Quadrature OFDMA systems based on layered FFT structure

TL;DR: It is shown that Q-OFDMA systems could achieve better performance than OFDMA when signal to noise ratio (SNR) is above a threshold depending on the channel condition, and advanced equalizers, such as minimum mean square error equalizer, can significantly decrease this threshold due to the large frequency diversity in Q-TOFMA systems.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
