This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions and discusses similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and presents examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.Abstract:
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.read more

System and method for turbo equalization and decoding in a receiver
TL;DR: In this article, a symbol detection and forward error correction (FEC) decoding system and method are presented that aim to increase decoding performance and maintain an acceptable level of complexity, in one embodiment, the method includes performing detection and decoding over a plurality of iterations, during the first iteration, a first equalizer structure processes a received signal, and a FEC decoder performs decoding on an input obtained from the output of the first equivalence structure.

Periodic-modulation based blind channel identification for single-carrier block transmission with frequency-domain equalization
Jwo-Yuh Wu,Ta-Sung Lee +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a blind channel identification scheme for single-carrier block transmission with frequency-domain equalization is proposed, which relies on the block system model and exploits the circulant channel matrix structure after the cyclic prefix is removed.

Flexible Multi-Group Single-Carrier Modulation: Optimal Subcarrier Grouping and Rate Maximization
TL;DR: In this article, a flexible multi-group single-carrier (FMG-SC) modulation scheme is proposed, which encapsulates both OFDM and SC-FDE as special cases, thus achieving more flexible rate-PAPR trade-offs between them.
