Abstract
Broadband wireless access systems deployed in residential and business environments are likely to face hostile radio propagation environments, with multipath delay spread extending over tens or hundreds of bit intervals. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplex (OFDM) is a recognized multicarrier solution to combat the effects of such multipath conditions. This article surveys frequency domain equalization (FDE) applied to single-carrier (SC) modulation solutions. SC radio modems with frequency domain equalization have similar performance, efficiency, and low signal processing complexity advantages as OFDM, and in addition are less sensitive than OFDM to RF impairments such as power amplifier nonlinearities. We discuss similarities and differences of SC and OFDM systems and coexistence possibilities, and present examples of SC-FDE performance capabilities.

A Survey on Prototype Filter Design for Filter Bank Based Multicarrier Communications

TL;DR: The goals of the present survey are to provide an extensive and unified review of wavef orm design issues for filter bank based multicarrier systems, shed some light on advantages and disadvantages of this technolo gy, and provide pointers to open research problems.

OFDM versus single carrier: a realistic multi-antenna comparison

TL;DR: The analysis shows that for frequency-selective channels the relative performance impact of the power amplifier is negligible compared to the frequency diversity impact, and the higher frequency diversity exploitation of SC-FD allows it to outperform OFDM in most cases.

Frequency-domain interference cancellation and nonlinear equalization for CDMA systems

TL;DR: Simulations performed for an uplink communication on a wireless multipath channel show that the combination of FD-IC, block DFE, and chip INT provides an efficient solution with good performance for CDMA systems in dispersive channels.

Energy-Efficient Channel-Dependent Cooperative Relaying for the Multiuser SC-FDMA Uplink

TL;DR: This paper exploits the benefits of combining the diversity gains that arise from cooperation, multiple propagation paths, and opportunistic relaying of multiple users to improve the energy efficiency of the amplify-and forward (AF) single-relay-assisted single-carrier frequency-division multiple-access (SC-FDMA) uplink.

Frequency Domain Interference Cancellation for Single Carrier Cyclic Prefix CDMA System

TL;DR: In this paper, a low complexity receiver structure for Single-input multiple-output (SIMO) downlink cyclic prefixCDMA (CP-CDMA) systems was proposed, which employs an interference cancellation scheme to suppress the interference caused by the multipath fading channel.

Analysis and Simulation of a Digital Mobile Channel Using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

TL;DR: The analysis and simulation of a technique for combating the effects of multipath propagation and cochannel interference on a narrow-band digital mobile channel using the discrete Fourier transform to orthogonally frequency multiplex many narrow subchannels, each signaling at a very low rate, into one high-rate channel is discussed.

BER sensitivity of OFDM systems to carrier frequency offset and Wiener phase noise

TL;DR: In this contribution the transmission of M-PSK and M-QAM modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signals over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is considered and the degradation of the bit error rate is evaluated.
