Garlic: Review of literature.

Abstract: Garlic is one of the components, which have effects on reducing the risk of cancer. Including garlic in the diet helps for the betterment of the health. Medicinal effects of the garlic were known since 5,000 years. Recently, studies were carried out to known its effect on the cancer cell lines. Many studies have shown its effects not only on carcinomas, but also on the cardiovascular system and immune system. Functions of the each component of the garlic were studied to know exactly, which component has got beneficial effect. So this review has been carried out to know about the component, functions of each component, mode of action, and beneficial effects of the garlic.

Abstract: Allium sativum, is a perennial flowering bulb which has been consumed worldwide as a functional food and known from thousands of years for its medicinal and culinary properties. Therapeutic potential of garlic is attributed to presence of its vital phytoconstituents. In present review, a complete therapeutic profile of drug is summarized by discussing its potential benefits highlighting the bioactive constituents. Phytoconstituents of crude drugs are used as antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, cardioprotective, anticancer, hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, etc. Thus, it could conclude that garlic is one of the superior natural sources of bioactive compounds and has promising applications in the development of functional foods and nutraceuticals to improve health, and to prevent chronic diseases in the human.

Abstract: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive motor neuron disease for which only limited effective therapeutics are available. Currently, TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) is recognized as a pathological and biochemical marker for ALS. Increases in the levels of aggregated or mislocalized forms of TDP-43 might result in ALS pathology. Therefore, clearance pathways for intracellular protein aggregates have been suggested as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of ALS. Here we report that treatment of motor neuron-like NSC34 cells overexpressing TDP-43 with diallyl trisulfide (DATS) induced neuronal autophagy and lysosomal clearance of TDP-43 and C-terminal TDP-43 fragments. We also observed that the antioxidant transcription factor NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) was accumulated in the nucleus and the expression of the antioxidant enzymes heme oxygenase1 (HO-1) and NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) was increased. Consequently, DATS suppressed the increase in the levels of reactive oxygen species induced by TDP-43 expression. This study extends the findings of prior reports indicating that lower doses of DATS mediate cell survival in part by inducing autophagy and activating the Nrf2/antioxidant response element pathway.

Abstract: Black garlic is a functional food produced from fresh garlic (Allium sativum L.) via fermentation with the whole bulbs or peeled cloves in a chamber in which temperature (60–90°C) and humidity (70–90%) are regulated for a period of time. Black garlic possesses an abundant amount of antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, tetrahydro-β-carboline derivatives, and organosulfur compounds, including S-allyl-cysteine and S-allyl-mercaptocysteine, as compared with fresh garlic. Note that fermentation not only alters the nutrition components and sensory attributes but also enhances the bioactivity of black garlic. A growing body of evidences demonstrating therapeutic effects of black garlic, including anticancer, anti-obesity, immunomodulatory, hypolipidemic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects, have been reported in the last few decades. This book chapter provides a literature review of therapeutic effects of black garlic from fundamental to clinical studies that can be used by food and nutrition experts, researchers, and scientists to improve people’s health and wellness.
