Genetic algorirhm based selection of wheeling transactions

TL;DR: In this article, an efficient GA-optimal power flow (GA-OPF) algorithm has been proposed to determine the optimal selection based on wheeling cost, which is independent of the cost characteristics of non-utility generators.
Abstract: This paper describes how to select a particular wheeling option among the various feasible transaction options available under de-regulated environment of modern power systems. An efficient GA-optimal power flow (GA-OPF) algorithm has been proposed to determine the optimal selection based on wheeling cost. In this proposed GA-OPF, Newton-Raphson method and GA algorithm have been used for power flow and economic dispatch respectively. Based on the power transfer capability and minimum generation cost, an optimal wheeling option will be suggested to both the owners of private non-utility generator (i.e. independent power producers or co-generators) and the utility. The proposed algorithm is independent of the cost characteristics of non-utility generators (NUGs). The proposed model has been tested on the IEEE 30 bus test system with synthetic imposition of wheeling transactions. The solutions obtained are quite encouraging and useful in the present de-regulated environment.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the best approach is to use the constriction factor while limiting the maximum velocity Vmax to the dynamic range of the variable Xmax on each dimension.
Abstract: The performance of particle swarm optimization using an inertia weight is compared with performance using a constriction factor. Five benchmark functions are used for the comparison. It is concluded that the best approach is to use the constriction factor while limiting the maximum velocity Vmax to the dynamic range of the variable Xmax on each dimension. This approach provides performance on the benchmark functions superior to any other published results known by the authors.

TL;DR: In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for solving the economic dispatch (ED) problem in power systems is proposed, and the experimental results show that the proposed PSO method was indeed capable of obtaining higher quality solutions efficiently in ED problems.
Abstract: This paper proposes a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method for solving the economic dispatch (ED) problem in power systems. Many nonlinear characteristics of the generator, such as ramp rate limits, prohibited operating zone, and nonsmooth cost functions are considered using the proposed method in practical generator operation. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated for three different systems, and it is compared with the GA method in terms of the solution quality and computation efficiency. The experimental results show that the proposed PSO method was indeed capable of obtaining higher quality solutions efficiently in ED problems.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors extend the Dommel-Tinney approach by incorporating exact outage-contingency constraints into the method, to give an optimal steady-state-secure system operating point.
Abstract: The Dommel-Tinney approach to the calculation of optimal power-system load flows has proved to be very powerful and general. This paper extends the problem formulation and solution scheme by incorporating exact outage-contingency constraints into the method, to give an optimal steady-state-secure system operating point. The controllable system quantities in the base-case problem (e.g. generated MW, controlled voltage magnitudes, transformer taps) are optimised within their limits according to some defined objective, so that no limit-violations on other quantities (e. g. generator MVAR and current loadings, transmission-circuit loadings, load-bus voltage magnitudes, angular displacements) occur in either the base-case or contingency-case system operating conditions.

TL;DR: Three very different methods of accomplishing the same task-managing the operation of the transmission system in the deregulated power system operating environment-have been implemented as deregulated market structures have been created around the world.
Abstract: Three very different methods of accomplishing the same task-managing the operation of the transmission system in the deregulated power system operating environment-have been implemented as deregulated market structures have been created around the world. They are first, the optimal power flow (OPF) model found in various implementations in the United Kingdom, parts of the United States, and in Australia and New Zealand. Second, the point tariff, price area congestion control model used in the Nordpool market area in Norway and Sweden. Third, the US transaction-based model. All are pragmatic solutions implemented in advance of complete theoretical understanding. Each has strengths and flaws, and there are some surprising inter-relationships. Each maintains power system security but differs in its impact on the economics of the energy market. No clearly superior method has so far emerged. In the future, methods of combining decentralized market solutions with operational use of optimal power flow may provide better solutions to existing and emerging problems.
