In the history of English, the Late Modern period offers a chance to observe rapid developments in petitioning practices as growing literacy rates open up potential access to the contemporary models of written request-making. Still the nature of Late Modern literacies complicates the attempts at written composition and participation in literacy cultures. In addition, spatial and social mobility that characterise European communities in the period not only generate more demand for active literacy, but also entail new factors, expectations and constraints on written communication. Thus the ways in which the Late Modern literacies may be elucidated and accessed through the study of petitions remain at the core of this investigation. The book embarks upon a (socio)pragmatic study of two sets of institutional correspondence surviving in connection to the British government colonisation scheme of the Cape of Good Hope, the 1820 settlement. The data, referred to as the candidate (1819) and colonial collections (1820-25), offer a unique opportunity to observe genre development over a relatively short span of time, to identify the specific aspects of genre change and to connect these to the discourse and language external context. The study focuses on the structural models of petition and issues of authorship, as well as variability of punctuation and aspects of spelling and morpho-syntax in the letters. The analysis makes use of specific digital methodologies, such as the n-gram analysis, as well as purely qualitative methods.

Abstract: With the advent of Twitter, microblogging has turned into a widely discussed phenomenon. Due to its perceived impact, many organisations have begun experimenting with the use of microblogging „behind the firewall‟, in order to support internal communication and group work. However, Enterprise Microblogging (EMB) is still in its infancy and not yet well understood. With this study we want to add to the rather limited body of knowledge a case study of Enterprise Microblogging in an academic setting. A multidisciplinary team of University researchers has adopted the platform Communote to collaborate and communicate. We conduct a genre analysis of the team‟s microblogging stream and find that EMB mainly serves as an effective medium for context building and meeting coordination in a project of otherwise loosely related individual activities. We compare our results with findings from two existing EMB cases, one of which has investigated the use of the same IT artefact in a different context. We find striking differences in usage patterns and show that EMB is highly dependent on the particular organisational context shared by the EMB users. Consequently, we conclude that appropriation of Enterprise Microblogging happens largely in accordance with organisational context characteristics.

Abstract: This article examines the structural markers okay, alright, right, and now and discusses the use and functions of these structures in the speech of Humani- ties and Natural Sciences instructors in 24 American university lectures. It then investigates whether there is a correlational link between different structural mark- ers and the academic division, age, and sex of the speaker. This article argues that cross-disciplinary differences in preferred teaching styles and content in lectures across different academic divisions are major factors determining variations in the use of structural markers in academic settings, while age plays only a minor role, and gender none at all. It has been 25 years since Harry Levin and Deborah Gray (1983) published their article "The Lecturer's OK " in American Speech, in which they comment on and analyze the use of okay as a discourse-structural marker by Ameri- can university lecturers. They provide a simple description of the lecturer's okay: a speaker talks, comes to the end of a topically united section, perhaps pauses briefly, says okay, and then continues talking. This usage seemed new to them at the time in this particular context. Their article is an early work documenting the spread of conversational structures into what used to be formal contexts dominated by read-out speech, but which have now mostly shifted to more casual speech styles and fresh talk. 1 While most of their formal and functional analysis describes the situa- tion very well, it does not examine the sociofunctional distribution of "the lecturer's OK " (henceforth "structural okay") in detail; nor does any subse- quent analysis over the last two decades (e.g., Merritt 1984; Condon 1986; Beach 1993; Heisler 1996; Rendle-Short 2000; Swales and Malczewski 2001; Bangerter and Clark 2003). The first point in this regard is that okay is not the only lexical item that structures discourse. Connections to and use of other structural markers such as alright, right, and now should also be investigated to allow a fuller systemic investigation of the sociofunctional distribution of
