TL;DR: In this paper, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen, applying one or several heuristics to the finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

TL;DR: In this paper, the graphical menu is displayed by receiving a time delay selected by an end-user, presenting to the user a graphical menu item wherein at least one menu item has a selectable option state, and waiting an amount of time greater than the time delay before removing the menu item from the display.
Abstract: A method, information processing system and computer readable storage medium for presenting a graphical menu item on a display. The graphical menu is displayed by receiving a time delay selected by an end-user; presenting to the end-user a graphical menu item wherein at least one menu item has a selectable option state; receiving input from the end-user for changing the option state on at least one menu item; and waiting an amount of time greater than the time delay before removing the graphical menu item from the display.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for expanding and contracting a window panel to uncover the panel's substantive content to the user without resize other panels and without reformatting their content, is described.
Abstract: A method for expanding and contracting a window panel to uncover the panel's content to the user without resize other panels and without reformatting their content, is described. A user chooses a window panel by moving a pointer to that panel. If there is content in that panel not shown to the user, the panel expands to show the entire content. If expansion is not necessary initially, the system waits to see if any actions by the user require expansion. Upon expansion at any stage, portions of neighboring window panels are covered instead of the neighboring panels contracting and reformatting their content. Once the pointer is moved out of a window panel, the panel contracts to its default or original size and the expansion process occurs for a newly entered panel. Also described is the process of determining the maximum expansion size of a window panel and the "rolling out" and "rolling in" characteristic of the expansion and contraction process.

TL;DR: In this paper, a portable computer has a base housing portion to which a display screen structure is pivotally connected, and a relatively small LCD projection structure is mounted on the top side of the base housing for pivotal movement relative to an upwardly extending use orientation and a downwardly retracted storage and transport orientation.
Abstract: A portable computer has a base housing portion to which a display screen structure is pivotally connected. The display screen structure is defined by a solid, relatively thin plastic screen panel instead of the usual lid/display screen housing having mounted therein an LCD panel, a panel illumination system and associated display electronics. To form a selectively variable image on the screen panel a relatively small LCD projection structure is mounted on the top side of the base housing for pivotal movement relative thereto between an upwardly extending use orientation and a downwardly retracted storage and transport orientation. The LCD projection structure includes a lens housing having a lens disposed therein, a small LCD projection panel supported on an underside portion of the lens, and a high intensity light source supported beneath the LCD projection panel. During use of the computer, screen driver circuitry within the base housing is used to form a selectively variable image on the LCD panel, and the illumination source causes the image to be projected in magnified form onto the raised screen panel.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a portable information device which can manage information specified by a user when necessary, memo infor mation, inputted images, etc., in a simple and easy-to-use style for the user and to provide information storage media used for them.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic book and a portable information device which can manage information specified by a user when necessary, memo infor mation, inputted images, etc., in a simple and easy-to-use style for the user and to provide information storage media used for them. SOLUTION: This portable information device is an electronic book having a function of automatically storing information specified or inputted by the user in a folder file while adding date information thereto. A finger operation detection part 10 detects finger input operation and is constituted by placing a transparent touch panel, etc., on a display part 6. The user can input contents entered on the display part 60 with a pen from a pen input part 12 and can also input filmed animation and photographed still pictures from a photographing part 14. A process content determination part 30 determines contents to be processed according to inputted data. A folder file process part 40 performs a process for storing the inputted data and specified data in the folder file 44 and a process for referring to the folder file.

TL;DR: In this paper, content is transferred from one computer resource to another computer resource by receiving a first insertion point or replacement area from a first user interface to a destination computer resource, receiving an enablement to perform automatic paste operation, switching to a user interface, and automatically copying the selected content to a transfer buffer and to the designated insertion point(s) in the destination computer resources.
Abstract: Content is transferred from one computer resource to another computer resource by receiving a first insertion point or replacement area from a first user interface to a destination computer resource, receiving an enablement to perform automatic paste operation, switching to a user interface to a source computer resource, receiving a user selection of content from said source user interface, and automatically copying the selected content to a transfer buffer and to the designated insertion point(s) in the destination computer resource. Additional content may be copied to the destination computer resource by simply selecting additional content in the same source computer resource or other computer resources without need to toggle back to the destination user interface between every copy and paste operation.
