TL;DR: In this paper, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen, applying one or several heuristics to the finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

TL;DR: In this paper, a user performs a manual selection or a gesture selection of a screen object (210, 220, 230) on a screen of an electronic device (100) using a pointing device (190).
Abstract: A user performs a manual selection or a gesture selection of a screen object (210, 220, 230) on a screen (150) of an electronic device (100) using a pointing device (190). After a manual selection, such as a single tap, the electronic device (100) automatically presents a temporary directional palette (450) having palette buttons (451, 452, 453, 454, 455) that explicitly state functions of the electronic device (100). Each palette button has a unique compass direction relative to the original tap area. By making a second tap on a desired palette button, a novice user learns available functions of the electronic device (100) and their corresponding directional gestures. Alternately, the user may perform a gesture selection of both a screen object and a function, such as making a double tap or drawing a line in the appropriate direction, before the directional palette appears on the screen (150).

TL;DR: In this article, a plurality of icons are displayed on a touch-sensitive display and a respective icon in at least a subset of the plurality of symbols corresponds to two or more symbols.
Abstract: A plurality of icons are displayed on a touch-sensitive display. A respective icon in at least a subset of the plurality of icons corresponds to two or more symbols. A contact by a user with the touch-sensitive display that corresponds to the respective icon is detected. A respective symbol in the two or more symbols to which the contact further corresponds is determined. The displayed respective icon is modified to indicate that the contact corresponds to the respective symbol.

TL;DR: In this article, a coordinate position inputting/detecting device comprises a lighting device for emitting light into an entry area into which an arbitrary pointing body is inserted to perform an entry operation.
Abstract: The coordinate-position inputting/detecting device comprises a lighting device for emitting light into an entry area into which an arbitrary pointing body is inserted to perform an entry operation. At least two image pickup devices are provided with a prespecified space therebetween on a peripheral section of the entry area for picking up images of the pointing body illuminated by the light from the lighting device. Position on the CCD of the image pickup devices where an image of the pointing body is formed is obtained according to output from each of the image pickup devices. Coordinates of the position of the pointing body in the entry area are calculated from these positions.
