Abstract: A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

TL;DR: A really wearable input device “FingeRing” is developed for coming wearable PDAs, and a new symbol coding method that combines order and chord typing is proposed, and useful typing patterns are chosen by typing speed evaluations.
Abstract: A really wearable input device “FingeRing” is developed for coming wearable PDAs. By attaching ring shaped sensors on each finger, many commands or characters can be input by finger-tip typing action. “FingeRing” can be used on any typing surface such as a knee or desk, so quick operation is realized in any situation while standing or walking. To improve wearability, a very small, ultra low power wireless transmitter is developed that uses the human body ss part of an electric circuit. “Direct Coupling” method enables stable communication even when body contacts any grounded surface. A new symbol coding method that combines order and chord typing is also proposed, and useful typing patterns are chosen by typing speed evaluations. Expert users of musical keyboards can input 52 different symbols at speeds of over 200 symbols per minute by using the combination of FingeRing and the new coding method.

TL;DR: In this paper, a point gesture is used to provide user control in virtual flight simulators, graphical editors, video games and other applications, where the point gesture can be used to control a virtual flight simulator.
Abstract: An input interface system provides gesture-based user control of an application running on a computer by classification of user gestures in image signals. A given one of the image signals is processed to determine if it contains one of a number of designated user gestures, e.g., a point gesture, a reach gesture and a click gesture, each of the gestures being translatable to a particular control signal for controlling the application. If the image signal is determined to contain a point gesture, further processing is performed to determine position and orientation information for a pointing finger of a hand of the user and its corresponding shadow. The position and orientation information for the pointing finger and its shadow are then utilized to generate a three-dimensional pose estimate for the pointing figure in the point gesture. For example, the three-dimensional pose estimate may be in the form of a set of five parameters (X, Y, Z, α, e), where (X, Y, Z) denotes the position of a tip of the pointing finger in three-dimensional space, and (α, e) denotes the respective azimuth and elevation angles of an axis of the pointing finger. The point gesture can thus be used to provide user control in virtual flight simulators, graphical editors, video games and other applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, an advanced user interface for use with a computer system operating on an integrated operating environment is presented, which allows a plurality of application programs to be running simultaneously, one of which is designated the active application program to which all input data is directed.
Abstract: An advanced user interface for use with a computer system operating on an integrated operating environment. The integrated operating environment allows a plurality of application programs to be running simultaneously, one of which is designated the active application program to which all input data is directed. The advanced user interface allows a user to select among user-friendly input devices to operate any application program according to his individual preferences without change to the application program code. The advanced user interface includes alternate input modules which translate the input signals transmitted from the various input devices into input messages useable by the rest of the interface. The advanced user interface also includes interface profiles which contain mappings of the input messages against corresponding commands useable by the application programs, the integrated operating environment or other modules of the advanced user interface itself. An environment link module refers to the interface profiles and matches the input message against the corresponding command for the application program active at the time the input signal was transmitted and send the corresponding command to that application program.
