The invention in one respect includes reading data from a multipoint sensing device such as a multipoint touch screen where the data pertains to touch input with respect to the multipoint sensing device, and identifying at least one multipoint gesture based on the data from the multipoint sensing device.

The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multi-functional hand-held device capable of configuring user inputs based on how the device is to be used. Preferably, the multifunctional hand-held device has at most only a few physical buttons, keys, or switches so that its display size can be substantially increased. The multifunctional hand-held device also incorporates a variety of input mechanisms, including touch sensitive screens, touch sensitive housings, display actuators, audio input, etc. The device also incorporates a user-configurable GUI for each of the multiple functions of the devices.

Abstract: A touch screen input device and method for use with a rear-mounted video output projection system incorporates a transparent sheet preferably having substantially parallel top and bottom surfaces as the touch screen panel. A rear-mounted light source projects light onto the rear surface of the touch screen panel, on which a diffusing surface is imposed, with the result that some of the light from the light source is totally internally reflected within the touch screen panel and is imaged by a rear-mounted video camera. When the front surface of the touch screen panel is touched by a finger or rubbery object, total internal reflection is interrupted and the video camera images the touch as a dark spot. Because the touch screen panel is a sheet having substantially parallel surfaces, the video output system with which the input device is designed to be used is a projection system, and the technology used to detect touches is optical imaging, the touch screen input device can be readily scaled up to desktop or large work-surface sizes. The touch screen input device operates equally well in an environment with any level of ambient light or no ambient light and can simultaneously detect multiple touches. The touch screen input device remains operative while books or other common desktop objects are left resting on portions of the touch screen panel.

Abstract: A method and a system for navigating a display screen to search for a desired item of information stored in an electronic device. The electronic device includes a novel fly over user interface (FOUI) capable of receiving commands from a user to provide a zoom out view of the display screen. A user may commence a navigation session by touching the display screen in a non active area or by clicking on a specifically designated icon to activate the user interface. During the navigation session, the display screen is zoomed-out and a magnifying area may appear on the display screen. The user interface enables the user to scroll the zoomed-out display screen by dragging the magnifying area towards an edge of the display screen to find a desired item of information. The display screen may be a display screen of a digital device (e.g., portable computer, personal computer, a cellular telephone, a digital watch, etc). The user may terminate a navigation session by removing the pointer from the display screen.

Abstract: An electrographic sensor for determining planar coordinates with good resolution, e.g., about 0.1 mm, and an overall accuracy of about 0.4 mm. A rectangular single sheet of extremely uniform resistive material has a row of small electrodes arranged along each edge with discrete resistors connected between adjacent electrodes of each row so as to form resistor networks along each edge of the resistive sheet. A switching circuit applies a voltage across the resistive sheet by applying one polarity to both ends of the resistor network of one edge and the opposite polarity to both ends of the resistor network at an opposite edge. At a desired time interval, voltage is switched to the second set of resistor networks so as to produce orthogonal electric fields in the resistive material during mutually exclusive time intervals. The sensor is contacted with probe at selected points to produce voltage signals which are proportional to the coordinates of any such points. Specific embodiments are described for punched-card reading, the preprogrammed interpretation of graphical data, and the movement of a probe across the sensor to produce continuous contacting for many applications.
