Abstract: Methods and systems for processing touch inputs are disclosed. The invention in one respect includes reading data from a multipoint sensing device such as a multipoint touch screen where the data pertains to touch input with respect to the multipoint sensing device, and identifying at least one multipoint gesture based on the data from the multipoint sensing device.

The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multi-functional hand-held device capable of configuring user inputs based on how the device is to be used. Preferably, the multifunctional hand-held device has at most only a few physical buttons, keys, or switches so that its display size can be substantially increased. The multifunctional hand-held device also incorporates a variety of input mechanisms, including touch sensitive screens, touch sensitive housings, display actuators, audio input, etc. The device also incorporates a user-configurable GUI for each of the multiple functions of the devices.

Abstract: Gestures for converting from a position control mode to a motion continuation mode are disclosed. A position control mode can be invoked when the user simultaneously places two or more fingers upon a sensor panel. The fingers can then be moved around to effect position control. A motion continuation mode can be invoked when one or more fingers are lifted off (but at least one finger remains in contact with the sensor panel). If the motion continuation mode is invoked, a virtual control ring can be generated, and scrolling of the viewable area or dragging of the cursor or object can continue in a particular direction specified by a velocity vector pointed in the direction of finger movement at the time the motion continuation mode is invoked, and having a magnitude proportional to the velocity of the finger at the time the motion continuation mode was invoked.

Abstract: A system and method that displays a semi-transparent user input interface relative to an application's currently focused input field at times when handwritten input is appropriate. The semi-transparent user interface starts when a program's text input field receives focus, can grow as needed to receive input, or will disappear when not used for a time. Handwritten data is recognized and passed to the application as if it was typed in the focused field, and the application need not be aware of handwriting, as the system and method are external to the application. Pen events that are not handwriting, but comprise gestures directed to the program through the semi-transparent input user interface, are detected by a gesture detection engine and sent to the application. A user is thus guided to enter handwriting, while handwriting recognition appears to be built into applications, whether or not those applications are aware of handwriting.

Abstract: A recognition system for a pen-based computer system characterized by: a tablet for inputting strokes from a stylus; a low-level recognizer responsive to the strokes and operative to perform low-level recognition on the strokes; a high-level recognizer responsive to at least some of the strokes and operative to perform high-level recognition on those strokes; and a recognition interface permitting communication between the recognizers and an application program. The high-level recognizer includes a controller capable of receiving units to be recognized; a number of recognition domains coupled to the controller, where each of the recognition domains can receive one or more units from the controller and is capable of providing an interpretation of the meaning of the one or more units to the controller; and an arbiter coupled to the controller which is capable of resolving conflicts between multiple interpretations developed by the recognition domains. A method implemented by the high-level recognition system includes the steps of creating a stroke object from a stroke generated by the stylus on the tablet; grouping the stroke object with at least one other stroke object, if possible; classifying the stroke object by passing the stroke object to a number of recognition domains; and arbitrating between conflicting classifications generated by the recognition domains. This permits unstructured, free-form inputs to a pen-based computer system to be recognized and acted upon by the system.

Abstract: A phantom keyboard is formed on a touch sensitive display as an input tool for a computer. The keyboard is superimposed on, though does not occlude from view, an image of an output of an application being run on the computer. In a another aspect of the invention, the simulated keyboard is displayed in a different fashion, in a window occupying, e.g., the bottom of the display rastor, while the application's output appears in a window occupying, e.g., the top of the display rastor. Since this arrangement provides only a fraction of the full rastor for displaying the output from the application program, a special scroll feature is provided. This feature permits the user to scroll through the full screen page of text, but without the text of any other screen pages appearing on the display. In yet another aspect of the invention, the key "auto-repeat delay" and "auto repeat rate" of the simulated keyboard are user adjustable, again preferably by an adjust appearing on the touch-sensitive display.
